Lolium, first mentioned in Virgil's Georgics, is an old Latin name for darnel, Lolium temulentum.
Lolium used to be included in the Triticeae, but evidence from genetics, morphology, and other studies show a close relationship to three former Festuca species included here in Schedonorus.
Lolium persicum, a native of southwest Asia, has been found as a weed in grain fields and waste places in southern Canada, Montana, North Dakota, and Wyoming and, as an adventive, in New York and Missouri.

Tall Fescue Information System, Oregon State University
The most famous member of the broad-leaved fescues is 6x Lolium arundinaceum (hexaploid tall fescue), well known for its excellent herbage yield and persistence as well as enhanced resistance to many grass pathogens.
Traditional defining morphological characters are: leaves with falcate auricles; raceme with spikelets in two opposite rows edgeways on the rachis; spikelets several to many flowered; lower glume absent (except terminal spikelet); upper glume abaxial, shorter than lemma to as long as spikelet, coriaceous; lemma membranous to coriaceous, with or without a subterminal awn; hilium linear.
Lolium pratense is also interfertile with 4x L. arundinaceum, and half of the chromosome complement of the latter pairs effectively with that of L. pratense.

A controversy arises when there is the possibility of lateral gene transfer from a genetically modified organism.
A species of ryegrass, Lolium rigidum, provides an example of this controversy in that a population of rye grass has shown resistance.
The aims of this project are to analyze the EPSPS gene sequence in Lolium rigidum and determine the mechanism of glyphosate resistance.
