Lolth's followers have been occupied with the conquest of the Underdark and the destruction of the faerie elves of the surface, and the Spider Queen has never ceased in her efforts to destroy the elven sanctuary of Evermeet.

The Quest to Heal Lolth - Page 2 - Wizards Community
The very fact that Lolth was good at one time makes her redeemable, she wasn't born evil, therefore at one point she was good...it my opinion, that means that somewhere, deep down inside her, is something good, something that can be brought to the surface and make her face her evil deeds and find redemption.
Yet, as it is with the drow (some attempted that too), you will have a hard time redeeming one who does not want to be redeemed nor has actually something in him or her that could be brought to the fore.
In the end, however the players would discover that the high priest, the one who oversees the cult is really a worshiper of Lolth and has manipulated the cult into getting the artifacts that he plans to use to drain the Elvish Pantheon of their divine power.

This was partially due to their not knowing much about FR Pantheon, and partially due to their wanting to play slightly off beat characters (and get into a particular prestige class).

This of course was a dilema for me because in FR, that diety technically doesn't have any presence.

To address the question; you homestly could do either, since, like you, I haven't read about Lolths return (or whatever the resolution to that plot arc was), or what exactly caused her disappearance.
If canon says that Lolth is no longer silent at that time, I'll keep the cleric as is. Otherwise I'll make the cleric a follower of a...

This book had Lolth as an active character (Lame as it was) with a Lame group of adventures traveling into the Abyss and Killing her in her walking fortress.
Lolth, I think, according to Gary Gygax, originally was created to be a little more than a challenge to players characters...thus 66 measly hit points, and a weak paltry array of spell-like powers.
In any case, in 1e, Lolth was simply a "minor divinity" who took advantage of the worship of the drow to sustain her power.

As for Corellon not admitting his mistake...um, he did toss out Lolth when she betrayed him,and he admitted that he was blinded so to speak.
Lolth is chaos, and as such "controllable", or at least predictable.
I think Corellon, in declaring Lolth tanar’ri, lost all influence over her...thus Lolth’s ascent in power was all her doing (showing how intelligent and tenacious she really is, compared to the more lax Corellon, which is similar to the drow vs. surface elf lifestyle).

They would want to free that aspect of Araushnee from Lolth, which would in turn free her of the "corruption" that you spoke of - as in Araushnee would be "born again" clean and pure - that which made her evil residing in the shell of Lolth that she leaves behind.
