“Dentistry is an increasingly popular career choice,” said Dr. Richard Valachovic, executive director of the ADEA, a nonprofit dental education organization based in Washington, D.C., that assists students interested in applying to dental schools.
Also, Dr. Bruce Sanders, assistant dean of outreach and diversity of UCLA School of Dentistry, said the fact that a dentist can establish family-friendly working hours is appealing to many, including the large numbers of women entering the profession.
Sanders, a retired oral surgeon who has taught at UCLA School of Dentistry since 1974, said he expects applicants to shadow a dentist at work or volunteer at a dental office or in a community clinic before applying to dental school.

Judson Klooster, DDS, dean emeritus of Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, died Oct. 31 in Loma Linda.
Loma Linda’s second dean, Charles Smith, persuaded Dr. Klooster to sell his Escondido practice to begin teaching full time, which he did in 1968.
Loma Linda University conferred the title of dean emeritus on Dr. Klooster in 1994, and he continued to teach.

Though the school officially opened this year, the seeds were planted nearly 40 years ago when Baum, one of the original faculty members of Adventist-owned Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, or LLUSD, became involved with Montemorelos in the 1960s.
But the school had many starts and stops, becoming first a dental residency program with the understanding that if it was successful, church officials would seriously consider opening a dental school.
In 2000, with the assistance of Loma Linda University and Grupo Estudios, the former residency program, was turned into a one-year intense training program for clinical candidates.

My initial involvement with Loma LInda University School of Dentistry began in 1978 when the School had three Mini-Tec Terminals (one of which was operational).
Since that time I've taken (1978-1986) or help take (1987-1995) the School through three translations (differing version of MIIS - a dialect of MUMPS), six different computers, from 15 routines to nearly 2,000 and from less than a megabyte of data to well over 1.25 gigabytes.
Even though the system was written in MIIS (a dialect of M or MUMPS) it would not be that difficult to translate it into M or Caché with a GUI interface.

Researchers from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry and Ohio State University College of Dentistry examined and surveyed 52 young adults with pierced tongues.
The rates of infection are as mush as four times as high as those in other California cities, said George F. Lemp, director of the University of California's AIDS Research Program.
