DESIDERIUS - LoveToKnow Article on DESIDERIUS
He was duke of Tuscany and became king of the Lombards after the death of Aistulf in 756.
Seeking, like his predecessors, to extend the Lombard power in Italy, he came into collision with the papacy, and about 772 the new pope, Adrian I., implored the aid of Charlemagne against him.
Such was the position when Charlemagne led his troops across the Alps in 773, took the Lombard capital, Ticinum, the modern Pavia, in June 774, and added the kingdom of Lombardy to his own domiiiions.

Station Information - Peaks and passes of the Alps
The Alps form a great mountain range, consisting of a main chain, with ramifications, and of several parallel minor chains.
They thus form a single connected whole as contrasted with the plains at their base, and nature has made no breaks therein, save at the spots where they sink to comparatively low depressions or passes.
Our selected divisions relate only to the High Alps between the Col de Tenda and the route over the Radstadter Tauern, while in each of the 18 subdivisions the less elevated outlying peaks are regarded as appendages of the higher group within the topographical limits of which they rise.

LOMBARDY - LoveToKnow Article on LOMBARDY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The climate of Lombardy is thoroughly continental; in summer the heat is greater than in the south of Italy, while the winter is very cold, and bitter winds, snow and mist are frequent.
In the summer rain is rare beyond the lower Alps, but a system of irrigation, unsurpassed in Europe, and dating from the middle ages, prevails, so that a failure of the crops is hardly possible.
Stranger still, in the 6th century the old Liguria was separated from it, and under the name of Alpes Cottiae formed the 5th Lombard province of Italy.

The Alps are largely formed from crystalline rocks (granites, gneisses, mica-schists, porphyries, etc.) but there are also sedimentary rocks (limestones, dolomites and sandstones) that are widespread in the eastern sector and the pre-Alpine belt.
This is the point at which it is possible to distinguish a high (gravel and sand) from a low (mainly mud and clay) plain, separated by a row of springs that have had an important influence in the development of the plain's agricultural economy (cultivation of the rice fields, water etc.).
As with the Alps so with the Apennines, three sectors can be distinguished: a northern one of largely sandstones, marls and clays, covering Liguria, Tuscany and Emilia; a central one essentially of limestones, covering Umbria-Marches and Latium-Abruzzo; and, finally, a southern one of mixed rock types, covering Campania, Basilicata and Calabria.

 Alps
The Eastern Alps are the part of the Alps east of the line between Lake Constance along the Rhine to Lake Como.
Many writers take the growth of grain as the characteristic of the mountain region; but so many varieties of all the common species are in cultivation, and these have such different climatal requirements, that they do not afford a factory criterion.
These do not reach exactly to the same elevation, nor are they often found growing together; but their upper limit corresponds accurately enough to the change from a temperate to a colder climate that is further proved by a change in the wild herbaceous vegetation.

The distinction from the latter group, where the higher peaks are located, is based on differences in geological composition.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Pope Adrian I
He strengthened the fortifications of Rome, called to the aid of the militia the inhabitants of the surrounding territory, and, as the Lombard host advanced, ravaging and plundering summoned Charles to hasten to the defence of their common interests.
Unable to bring the deceitful Lombard to terms by peaceful overtures, he scaled the Alps in the autumn of 773, seized Verona, where Gerberga and her sons had sought refuge, and besieged Desiderius in his capital.
We may well doubt whether the great King of the Franks would have suffered the difficulties of the Pope to interfere with his more immediate cares, were it not for his extreme personal veneration of Adrian, whom in life and death he never ceased to proclaim his father and best friend.

ROCK ART & PETROGLYPHS: Prehistoric Petroglyphs at Sasso delle Fate
The reference area for the rock art in Italy is Valcamonica, a valley of the river Oglio flowing through the Lombard Alps, North of lake Iseo.
It is reasonable to consider that this same trail, along the Vescina stream, was used by prehistoric shepherds and the Sasso delle Fate represented one of their ritual centres.
In conclusion, although the Alps remain the centre of a central Mediterranean rock art tradition, and very likely the place of origins of rock art in Italy, we know that it is a tradition not restricted to this area, but extends to the Ligurian Apennines at Finale (Graziosi 1974, Odetti and Ravaggia 1985, Tizzoni 1975).

 FOCUS on ITALY - Geography
Besides the continental section (Alps and Po-Venetian Plain), there is a long and indented peninsula that is almost completely occupied by the Apennine chain, the two large islands (Sicily and Sardinia) marking the borders of the Tyrrhenian Sea and many other minor island groups (Tuscan Archipelago, Lipari Islands, etc.).
Indeed, the most inland zones of the peninsula are little more than 100 km from the sea (the peninsula's widest point, between the Argentario Promontory and Mount Conero, does not exceed 240 km) and on the two largest islands is rarely greater than 50 km.
Even for continental Italy the zone furthest from the sea (the Spluga Pass in the Lombard Alps) is only just 230 km away.
