Lombok is a much drier and tougher island than its lush neighbor Bali, defined by dry desert terrain, rugged highlands, towering volcanoes, dramatic bays and headlands, and numerous white sand beaches scattered throughout the southern coast.
Lombok is lesser known for its plethora of more innocuous, fun waves scattered along its W and S facing coasts - some of which are very difficult to find and reach, but the process of discovery can be an experience to never forget.
Lombok is an easy escape from the severe crowds of Bali and for those surfers seeking a greater variety of setups including rights, pointbreaks, beginner and intermediate level waves (in contrast to Padang Padang, Uluwatu, Kuta Reef, etc…).

It is part of the chain of the Lesser Sunda Islands, with the Lombok Strait separating it from Bali to the west and the Alas Strait between it and Sumbawa to the east.
The Lombok Strait marks the passage of the biogeographical division between the fauna of Indo-Malaysia and the distinctly different fauna of Australasia that is known as the Wallace line, for Alfred Russel Wallace, who first remarked upon the distinction between these two major biomes.
Lombok is similar in many ways to Bali, but less well-known and less-visited, and it has been working to increase its visibility to tourists in recent years, promoting itself as an "unspoiled Bali".
