Lon McCallister, whose brief but prolific acting career started with small roles in "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and developed into supporting roles in popular movies such as "Winged Victory," has died.
McCallister was just a teenager starting out in show business when he appeared in films alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood.
McCallister's boyish looks mostly cast him in roles playing wholesome characters, including one of the schoolboys in the 1938 Tom Sawyer film when he was 15.

The "boy" McCallister was over 20 at the time, although cherubic looks and small stature allowed him to play adolescents almost until his retirement from acting in 1953 at the age of 30.
McCallister's first real break came in Stage Door Canteen (1943), as the shy recruit called California, who gets the chance to act the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet with Katherine Cornell as a great lady of the theatre.
McCallister is survived by a brother and a sister.

Lon became close friends with the film's director George Cukor, and attributed his biggest break to Cukor when he earned a supporting role as a pilot in Winged Victory (1944), after toiling in obscurity for nearly 6 years.
Lon also stood out in the films Stage Door Canteen (1943), as the unassuming soldier who falls for canteen hostess Marjorie Riordan, and in the warm and winning horse-racing tale Home in Indiana (1944) opposite rising star Jeanne Crain.

Rare was a movie magazine of that era that didn't splash McCallister across its pages, with his clean-cut, good boy image also displayed on many of their covers.
Being small (5 feet 6 inches) and compact made him ideal to play farm boys and jockeys, but it also made a transition to adult roles more difficult; McCallister later said he wasn't concerned about that because, early on, he'd made a vow to retire from performing by the time he was 30.

At 13, he had an uncredited role in "Romeo and Juliet" with lead actress Norma Shearer and lead actor Leslie Howard.
"Lon was one of the most caring men - sensitive toward others - I've ever known," actress Allene Roberts, who met McCallister while they were filming the 1947 thriller "The Red House," said this week.

I noticed on my Comcast homepage this morning that character actor Lon McCallister has died of heart failure at the age of 82.
I know the name, but I wasn’t certain as to whether I had actually seen him in anything so I glanced at the IMDb and noticed that he had made appearances in films like Winged Victory (1944) and The Red House (1947).
Lon was a popular juvenile actor who was able to retire at the age of 30 (though I remember he was often asked about by fans; he was mentioned in one of Richard Lamparski’s “Whatever Became Of” books) and make profitable investments in real estate.

Lon McCallister is fine in what is really the lead role, and a very fine performance by young Allene Roberts (whatever happened to her!).
The DVD is pretty much of the bargain-bin variety, though there are a couple of little extras on it...most notably explaining that Robinson's career came to a standstill after this film because of the Hollywood fllist.
When Nath says he is taking a shortcut through the woods, Pete goes off half-cocked and starts ranting about the woods being haunted, screams in the night, and the evils of a red house.
