  Chestnut Breasted Manakins
Members of the genus Lonchura (species including the Nuns and Spice Finches) are often called Munia or Mannikins.
In fact the entire Lonchura genus is somewhat renowned for the great difficulty in encouraging wild caught birds to go to nest in cages or aviaries.
(Lonchura castaneothroax) is one of the few, perhaps the only dependable free breeding species in the genus Lonchura (not including the Society Finch).

Description, Black above this having a distinct greenish sheen, flanks are Black but are striped with White scalloping, and the under-parts are white, another feature is two or three small white spots on the innermost tertials on the wing.
I had begun to condition my birds for breeding by providing egg-food twice a week, I had several pairs of Cordons and Blue Caps that after over-wintering I had given to a friend, this left me with 5 trays of mealworm cultures that were very productive.
So my lonchura species that enjoyed them received them daily and I still had plenty, my L.bicolor’s were eating a couple a day but showed no great enthusiasm for them, but still they received some daily.

There is much confusion over what species contributed to the origins of the modern mutations we see in our bengalese.
As far as recorded history of the development of today’s “modern mutations” which I assume to be the birds that have originated in Continental Europe, is concerned only two species are indicated as playing a part and these are: Lonchura maja The White-headed Munia were Fred Panjer tells us..
Yes Lonchura stygia (Black Mannikin) seems a very likely candidate for inclusion in the history of the development of these birds,; but for my money look at Lonchura fuscans (Dusky Munia)a much more likely candidate for the role.

 BIRDCHAT archives -- July 2000, week 2 (#98)
Howard and Moore (the 1984 Papermac edition at least and this may be revised in the more recent edition) gives Lonchura bicolor as occurring throughout sub-Saharan Africa and L. b nigriceps as the subspecies occurring from East Africa to Natal.
The list of proposed "new" names for the forthcoming Seventh edition of Roberts Birds of Southern Africa lists the species as Spermestes bicolor as does the SandM "type" list, but the English names are listed as Red-backed Mannikin and Black-and-White Munia respectively.
SandM have treated as a distinct species the southern Africa form as the Brown-backed Munia (Lonchura nigriceps).

Feathered Flyer - White-headed Munia (Lonchura maja)
I have bred these birds in the past, regularly in aviaries, infrequently in cages, the last being in 2000, and I have no plans to breed them again at present.
As a general rule my advice if you want to attempt breeding from any of the commonly imported lonchura species is obtain juveniles, I firmly believe that they form their pair bonds very early even when in juvenile plumage, attempts to force pairs together as adults rarely succeed.
Mix them in with Bengalese youngsters to moult, this steadies them and they learn to accept and consume not only your standard diet but egg-food as well, which will stand you in good stead for conditioning and breeding later.

Time of feeding and possible associated thermoregulatory benefits in bronze mannikins Lonchura cucullata
This increase in metabolic rate has been reported to possibly substitute for thermoregulatory costs in a variety of endotherms, including house wrens (Troglodytes aedon) and a variety of finch species.
Similarly, bronze mannikins (Lonchura cucullata) are small birds, between 8-13 g in mass (11) common through much of south-east Africa.
Because of their small mass, and associated high surface-area to volume ratios, bronze mannikins may experience substantial cold stress at relatively high temperatures.
