channel4.com - Time Team 2002 - Londinium, Edge of Empire
A long way from Rome, Londinium has tended to be regarded as something of a frontier town, an unsophisticated outpost perched precariously on the very edge of the Roman empire.
In the past decade, though, a huge amount of redevelopment has taken place in the City, providing an unparalleled opportunity for archaeologists to find out more about the old Roman city beneath the modern streets and buildings.
What they've discovered suggests that far from being a relatively uncivilisedbackwater Londinium was in fact one of the most sophisticated and advanced cities in the entire empire.

Londinium / Fourplay review (2001) Colin Firth - Qwipster's Movie Reviews
Proving once again that Woody Allen's style is constantly duplicated but rarely replicated, Londinium tries to crack sharp about the natural staleness that begins to grow after the luster of the first year together wears off, but just doesn't have the right comedic chemistry to back up the script.
Much of this is Binder's own fault, who directs this film as if he were making some sort of light 60s romantic comedy, with a completely misplaced old fashioned musical score, and attempts at frothy whimsy that doesn't jibe with the cynical thematic makeup of the material.
There are very few laughs to be found in Londinium, and with the message that all relationships are only good when they are new and fresh, it's not really even recommended for people seeking a date flick or feel-good romantic comedy.

 Londinium
The governor’s guard and staff were seconded and lived here, drawn from other legionary units, probably in the fort near Cripplegate, built around 90 A.D. In the late second century, a great fortress gate surrounded the city, parts of which survive to this day, enclosing more than 330 acres.
At the same time (and perhaps, due to disturbances that accounted for building the great wall), Londinium’s trade apparently suffered some decline, although luxurious townhouses continued to be built in the city.
The status of Londinium is unclear: it may have been, successively, a municipium and a colonia and may have served as a provincial capital in the Early Empire.

From the cacophonous, sub-animal emanations of the tortured, drunken, brutish armies of slaves within its walls came the language of Londinium, an irresistible, self-perpetuating plague, unquenchable in its appetite for the human minds, human lives, human souls.
And Londinium was spared the self-destruction of the former and the vengeance of the global enslaved visited on the latter, as the suffering and torture of the human cattle within this abattoir of evil ensured that no such heresy against Speech could ever be contemplated.
