The California Historical Society borrowed the original 1906 negatives from the Jack London collections, which were enlarged from the original 5-1/2 inch by 3-1/4 inch image sized negatives.
Inspection of the 1906 negatives revealed that the lens in the Londons’ camera was much better than those in popular box or "pin hole" roll film cameras of the era, and was likely a top of the line camera with a very fine lens, and shutter and aperature controls.
The Jack London collection photographs were printed by California Historical Society photographer Philip Adam using an enlarger with a cold light head, a type of light source advocated by Ansel Adams.

Between 1907 and 1909, London and Charmian sailed around the world, and London wrote extensively about their time on the trip (The Cruise of the Snark) and about the Hawaiian Island, which he popularized as a vacation spot.
While London was one of the highest paid and most successful writers of his time, he was terrible at managing money, and he was always short of cash.
London died on November 21, 1916 of kidney failure, a result of his serious and lifelong problems with alcohol.
