It is relatively easy to stand for election as an independent candidate, although wins are very rare and usually involve special circumstances (for example Martin Bell's 1997 victory against the discredited Conservative MP Neil Hamilton was aided by the major parties standing aside and not contesting the election).
United Kingdom general elections are the elections held when the Members of Parliament (MPs) forming the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom are elected.
The British local elections of 2004 were held on the tenth of June, as part of the 2004 set of elections along with the European elections and the London mayoral and Assembly elections.

The Assembly is elected by the Additional Member System.
An additional eleven members were allocated by a London wide top-up vote, with the proviso that parties must win at least 5% of the vote to qualify for list seats.

The Assembly’s role is to monitor the mayor’s proposals and the new make-up may cause the mayor difficulties.
The first London mayoral election in 2000 was won by Mr Livingstone, who was previously leader of the Greater London Council (GLC) and, after the Council's forced close down by the then Conservative government, sat as a Labour Member of Parliament.
He won subsequently the mayoral election in May 2000, and was promptly expelled from the Labour Party for five years, with Prime Minister Tony Blair predicting that his tenure would be "a disaster for London".

The list of nominated candidates for mayor of London and the 25 members of the London Assembly, has been announced.
Elections are being held on 10 June to elect both the mayor and assembly, in addition to nine members of the European Parliament to represent London.
Nominations for all three elections closed at 4pm yesterday, and London Elects — the Office of the Greater London Returning Officer, and Regional Returning Officer — is required by law to publish the list of mayoral and assembly nominations before 12pm on 17 May.

It was the Assembly of Social Movements in Florence in November 2002 that issued the call, which brought between 10 and 20 million people onto the streets on 15 February 2003 against the invasion of Iraq.
This year the Assembly of the Social Movements is at a crossroads, both in the struggle against Bush and Blair's attempt to crush the Iraqi (and Palestinian) resistance, and in the struggle to claw back social gains, cut wages and increase hours.
During the ESF we need to fight for the daily preparatory meetings for the Assembly to draw in proposals from the plenaries, seminars and workshops, and to agree on a militant draft resolution of major mobilisations for 2005.

On the 17 December 2004, the London Assembly's 2004 Election Review Committee released its report into the Mayoral Elections earlier in the year.
It is convenient to assume that the majority of these people simply decided not to vote on this occasion, but this is not necessarily the case.
Our report shows that there is some serious work to be done in London to prevent postal voting becoming more like a lottery than an election.

LONDON — Britain will send another 400 troops to Iraq ahead of elections there, Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon said Monday.
Hoon said the deployment was being made on the recommendation of the British commanding officer on the ground and would be “for a limited period of time.”
The Pentagon has swelled U.S. forces in Iraq by 12,000 in an effort to provide security for the coming elections, but that new deployment is expected to be temporary.

UNITED NATIONS and WASHINGTON - The United Nations yesterday agreed to send a mission to Iraq to assess the feasibility of holding elections ahead of the transfer of sovereignty at the end of June, following pleas from the US-led coalition and Iraq's Governing Council to intervene in a dispute with the country's Shia community.
Mr Annan said he would seek views from a "broad spectrum" of Iraqis "in the search for alternatives that might be developed to move forward to the formation of a provisional government".
He has already indicated there may not be time to organise direct elections to a transitional national assembly, as called for by followers of Ayatollah Ali Sistani, the Shia leader.
