The current borough was formed in 1965 from the former area of the Municipal Borough of Southgate, the Municipal Borough of Enfield and the Municipal Borough of Edmonton.
The creature on the shield of the Enfield coat of arms is known in heraldry as an "Enfield" (or colloquially as the Enfield beast), and is used extensively as a logo representing Enfield, particularly by the borough council.
Enfield is served by the Piccadilly Line of the London Underground with stations at Arnos Grove, Southgate, Oakwood and Cockfosters.

London TravelWatch, the watchdog for transport users' in London, has objected to the London Borough of Enfield regarding the proposal to implement part-time bus stops on Bowes Road in New Southgate.
London Buses are providing accessible buses, but in Enfield those that need to access the bus on Bowes Road will sometimes find vehicles parked in the bus stops, so the buses will not be able reach the kerb, making the ramp for wheelchairs and baby buggies or prams useless.
Rufus Barnes continued: "It was made clear to London TravelWatch that from the end of the year, the DDA will impose a duty on local authorities to promote equality in respect of bus stops, and that a blanket refusal to consider the needs of wheelchair users would be illegal.

For a fee the Corporation of London can also collect larger quantities which are difficult to handle or too large for transport to a recycling centre.

The London Borough of Enfield has been named winner of the Corporation of London's Liveable City Awards 2005, and Beacon Press won the inaugural Environment Business Outstanding Achievement Award.
Enfield's win marked the first time that a public sector organisation has taken the overall title with the Borough receiving the honour as a result of its outstanding entry in the Built Environment category.
The judges were impressed by Enfield's first class record in encouraging the construction of sustainable buildings and in particular in establishing comprehensive performance monitoring systems to quantify the impact of the Borough's interventions.

Because the lake is part of the public open space owned by the London Borough of Enfield, the Council took Derek Mahoney to court in an attempt to recover the cross.
Only recently, during an exhibition by the Enfield Archaeological Society in the grounds of Forty Hall in 1995, members of the public were asking for more information about the discovery of a ‘golden cross’, a ‘golden crown’ and even a ‘golden sword’ (shades of Excalibur!) in the lake at Forty Hall.
Membership of the Enfield Archaeological Society is open to all with an interest in the past.
