The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames is a London borough in South West London and part of Outer London.
The borough is also home to the National Physical Laboratory and the attractions of Hampton Court Palace, Twickenham Stadium and the WWT London Wetlands Centre draw both domestic and international tourism.
The borough was formed in 1965 by the merger of the Municipal Borough of Twickenham from Middlesex with the Municipal Borough of Richmond upon Thames and the Municipal Borough of Barnes from Surrey.

Teddington is situated on the north bank of the River Thames, and its large lock (1912) marks both the North Sea tidal limit on the Thames and the upstream limit of the jurisdiction of the Port of London Authority.
Most of the borough belongs to the historic county of Gloucestershire, but the villages of Teddington and Chaceley and the surrounding areas belong to the historic county of Worcestershire.
The Port of London extends along the Thames River from its mouth on the North Sea upstream to Teddington, where a dam and lock block further inland penetration by normal tides.

With new funding from the London Recycling Fund an expansion of the scheme to 4000+ households with the inclusion of meat waste is planned for quarter 1 2005/6.
The borough received joint funding with the London Boroughs of Hounslow, Brent and Ealing from the London Recycling Fund which was used to role out the green garden waste collection service across the borough.
The Borough was also given commuter recycling bins by London Remade, for the recycling of newspapers near train stations.

Richmond and Twickenham Friends of the Earth have been campaigning for more recycling and composting in the London Borough of Richmond and nationally for many years.
Richmond‘s recycling and composting rate for the year 2002-3 was 20.5%.
This was better than most other London Boroughs (the highest was Bexley on 22%) but considerably lower than the best performing councils around the country and elsewhere in Europe.

He said: "It was an enormous privilege for the ship's company of HMS Richmond to be granted the Freedom of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and to take part in the ceremony, including marching through the streets of Twickenham with bayonets fixed, swords drawn, and band playing.
