CMT.com : London Philharmonic Orchestra : Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
It was proposed that the ensemble, to be called the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, would serve as the orchestra for both the BBC and the Royal Philharmonic Society.
Beginning in that season, the Society changed its arrangement: The Philharmonic gave only three of the eight annual concerts a year, while the remaining five were divided among the BBC Orchestra, the London Symphony, the Hallé Orchestra, and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.
From this lowlight the Philharmonic's standards and financial situation slowly improved through the 1960s and 1970s, aided by the leadership and acumen of such distinguished figures as Adrian Boult, William Steinberg, John Pritchard, and Georg Solti.

 Carnegie Hall: London Philharmonic Orchestra
The London Philharmonic Orchestra is not to be confused with the more prestigious and refined London Symphony Orchestra (a similar confusion exists between the superb Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the more pedestrian Vienna Symphony Orchestra).
The London Philharmonic Orchestra is a serviceable group which plays in the pit at the Glyndebourne Opera in the summer, makes numerous soundtrack recordings, and prides itself on educational outreach work.
Masur, despite being the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal conductor, seemed to have little rapport with the orchestra.

London Philharmonic Orchestra (Symphony Orchestra) - Short History
It was a telling debut for the London Philharmonic Orchestra (= LPO) which was founded by Sir Thomas Beecham from the players in the country with the intention that it should be THE London orchestra, a counterpart to the orchestras of Vienna and Berlin.
In September 1992, the LPO was appointed Resident Symphony Orchestra at the South Bank Centre, performing in the Royal festival Hall in London.
The LPO is unique amongst London orchestras in its 33 year summer residency at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in Sussex.

Masur, however, seemed to be having a high old time, conjuring deliciously fruity woodwind playing from the London Philharmonic, which only served to emphasise the rather computerised sounds from the piano.
Huang is too perfect - I want risk, danger, the element of surprise, anything to distinguish her from the rest of her generation of mechanically perfect prodigies.
The concert was recorded for future transmission on BBC Radio 3 on December 3rd as part of a special celebration of Kurt Masur’s 75th birthday: tune in.

That said, this was still a very fine performance that penetrated to the heart of this surprisingly disturbing work, and the all-too-brief finale was given an encore.
The Philharmonic Concerto is very special to the LPO, it being the eponymous "Philharmonic".
To my ears at least, the massive opening dissonance, along with the fractured rhythm of the first subject, nods in the direction of the American "Big Band" style, and is therefore entirely in keeping with the work’s ostensible purpose, as a showpiece written for the LPO’s tour of the USA in 1976.

Ostensibly, the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s popular programme of war-horse classics didn’t seem to inspire surprise, but under Takuo Yuasa’s direction these works sounded astonishingly fresh and newly minted.
The London Philharmonic Orchestra responded warmly to his baton, playing with precision and panache throughout the evening.

Anne-Sophie Mutter (violin); London Philharmonic Orchestra/Kurt Masur, Royal Festival Hall, Tuesday, February 3
Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Beethoven Violin Concerto are hardly strangers – she recorded the piece with the Berliner Philharmoniker and von Karajan when a mere slip of a girl (DG 413 818-2), then returned to the piece in May 2000 for a live performance with the New York Philharmonic under Kurt Masur (471 349-2).
Nevertheless, it was the Beethoven that made the evening worthwhile.

The Largo is introverted but poignant, with handsome, sustained pianissimo playing, and the finale has great energy, but not quite enough of the grotesque--it's a bit too well-groomed.
Though routinely depicted as an archetype of the modern pianist as predominantly analytical and heavily "cerebral" (albeit in a sense somewhat different from that of Maurizio Pollini), Brendel shouldn't be boxed into such easy categories--and much of the artistry represented on his third volume in the Philips series is a case in point.
