Streets of London - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Streets of London is a song written by Ralph McTell.
It was his greatest commercial success, reaching number two in the UK singles chart and, at one point, selling 90,000 copies a day.
The song was written around McTell's experiences busking and hitchhiking throughout Europe, especially in London and Paris; although the individual stories are taken from Parisians, London is chosen for its arguably more sonorous name.

BBC - Radio 2 - Sold On Song - TOP 100 - Streets Of London
His song “Streets Of London” rocketed to number two in 1974, selling 90,000 copies a day at one point, and is generally regarded as a classic.
Not wishing to offend Parisians, he changed the setting to London, but felt the song was too depressing and left it off his debut album.  However, when a fellow folk star began playing it live with great success, McTell included the song on his second album, 1969’s Spiral Staircase.
“Streets Of London” soon became a firm favourite in UK folk circles and when McTell signed to a major label in 1974, they convinced him to re-record it with a backing band.

London today became the scene for what appears to be the biggest public rally in British history.
The London demonstration, which organisers currently estimate to be 1.5m people strong, began ahead of its scheduled starting time as the numbers congregating at Embankment forced police to allow them to march through Westminster and Whitehall earlier than expected.
Thousands of anti-war protesters also took to the streets of Glasgow, marching through the city centre towards the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, where the Labour party's spring conference is being held.

Londoners consume three times their fair share of the Earth’s resources according to a comprehensive report released yesterday, only days after the Johannesburg Conference on sustainable development.
The City Limits report, based on estimates of London’s resource use and disposal for the Year 2000 and the first of its kind, also states the capital would have to reduce its ecological footprint by 35 percent by 2020 to be sustainable, 85 percent by 2050.
Each person in London would require an area roughly equivalent to eight football pitches to provide for their current levels of consumption and waste, say consultants Best Foot Forward, which conducted the study in conjunction with the Greater London Authority and the Institution of Civil Engineers among others.

Ralph McTell is one of the true triple threats of the British folk-music scene: a good songwriter, a skillful singer, and a superb guitarist.
This is McTell's 1975 "Streets" album re-released in 1981 to take advantage of the fact that his "Streets of London" has become a folk standard, recorded by over 200 artists, including Bruce Springsteen and Aretha Franklin.
It is the best track on the album by far, but there are several other excellent songs that show McTell's strength as a solo artist, of which "Heron Song" and "Grande Affaire" are the best.
