 Victoria
The Victoria Station and Pimlico Railway was established in 1858 to extend the lines from Stewarts Lane across the river to a new terminus in a smart part of London, only a short distance from Buckingham Palace.
The rather shambling original Victoria was rebuilt in a grand manner in the first decade of the 20th century with the LBSCR station being completed in 1908 and the LCDR side in 1909.
Even today the station is operated as two distinct set of services and though the departures and arrivals boards inform of all services there is still concentration on their own services on each side.

CHRISTOPHER A LONG - Victoria Station
It is worth considering for a moment what the twin stations at Victoria meant to a generation which, until the arrival of the railways a few years before, had never travelled any faster than a horse could gallop or further than a carriage could take them.
Victoria Station was not named after Queen Victoria herself but after Victoria Street which had been called Shaftsbury Terrace until it was rebuilt in 1851 to become famous later on for high class shops and stores such as the Army and Navy.
For four years Victoria Station became not so much the 'gateway to the world' as the gateway to the hell and carnage of Flanders, The Somme and, with any luck, the Blighty wound that would bring a man back home, maimed but at least alive.

On that first day of training I went for breakfast to the staff room in Victoria Station.
Most of the staff were Londoners, middle-aged, who still remembered (and talked about) the war, with a sprinkling of Jamaicans and one or two Asians.
There was the usual group of uniformed stationmen and stationwomen walking in and out, making tea, greeting each other.
