Genealogy and the London Area, England
London is situated in south-east England, at the head of the Thames estuary.
London became important because it was the first place at which it was possible to build a bridge across the River Thames, whose estuary effectively blocked movement between Kent and Essex.
London was thus established, like so many major early towns, at the crossing of two major routes, one being land-based traffic travelling between north and south of the river, the other river based between east and west, the Thames being navigable up to Lechlade in Gloucestershire, about 80 miles west of the city.

Contemporaries often complained that the many problems accompanying this urban development were the result of immigrants flocking to the rapidly expanding suburbs around the City of London.
His argument begins with an analysis of sermons, tracts, and poems suggesting that some Londoners of the time considered the suburbs and their liberties subject to the same kind of human and divine authority as the City, which consequently made them integral parts of the metropolis.
The author then draws on the records of more than twenty livery companies to demonstrate that many members lived and worked in the suburbs and were as likely to flaunt City traditions and authority as immigrants.
