For Londonderry and this group, the agreement at Munich was a triumph, because it avoided war and insured a valid sphere of control for Germany.
Londonderry's failure was that as Air Minister he failed to provide Britain with the air power needed to deter Hitler and to communicate to his German contacts - Goring, Ribbentrop, von Papen and Hitler - that Britain would use that power.

The origin of Danny Boy or Londonderry Air
It was appropriate that it was Jane who helped to preserve the air for future generations for it was her ancestors who, according to the lore, had been responsible for inspiring its composition.
As soon as the air was published by Petrie the great lyricists of the day vied with each other to find suitable words but for some reason no one could find lyrics to bring to life the most enchanting of all Irish melodies.
He states that the most striking difference between "Aislean" and the "Air" is the melodic development of the fourth and final phrase, which "makes the air almost impossible to sing in traditional style while endearing it to the virtuoso eager for effects of vocal expression".

In Gilchrist's 1934 article she suggested that the air's 4/4 time-signature - the metre in which the tune appears in Petrie and, by inference, the metre in which Ross notated the tune - could be a mistake.
It is possible that it was a mere surmise on her part, founded on her knowledge of the style of melody in the few ascribed to this famous harper, and suggested by the fact that the part of County Derry in which Petrie took it down was O'Cahan's native territory.
Arguably the most significant thing which made Hugh Shields, and others, suspicious of the air, and led to the suspicion that Ross may have tampered with its composition, is the tune's latter section which reaches to a height that is atypical in the vernacular song tradition.

I first heard the air in Stanford’s Irish rhapsody in D minor, included in the programme of a HallĂ© Concert at Manchester in 1904 or 1905, conducted by Hans Richter.
The popularity of the Londonderry air is undoubtedly concurrent with the musical activities of the BBC, whose artists have played it times without number: until now it takes an equally prominent place in the repertoire of that superb artist John McCormack and of the most lowly street singer.
I have not noticed this reasoning expressed elsewhere, though the most interesting article on the history of the air, so far as is known, appears in the last issue of the Journal of the English Folk Dance and Song Society.
