In addition, Lone Pine is at the junction of Whitney Portal Road and U.S. 395; Whitney Portal is the road which leads to the trailheads to both Mount Whitney and the John Muir Wilderness.
Immediately south of Lone Pine is the junction with SR 136, which leads to Death Valley.

The Great Lone Pine earthquake was one of the largest earthquakes to hit California in recorded history.
The quake struck on March 26, 1872 and its epicenter was near Lone Pine, California in Owens Valley.
Of the estimated 250-300 inhabitants of Lone Pine, 27 are known to have perished and 52 of the 59 houses were destroyed.

According to the site, Lone Pine was founded in the 1860s to serve local miners and later farmers who tilled the Owens Valley until the 1920s, when Los Angeles began exporting water from the Owens River and surrounding creeks to serve the city's growing population.
Lone Pine and the Alabama Hills became the focus of California's attention on March 26, 1872, when a small earthquake was felt in San Francisco &endash; an earthquake that was centered in Lone Pine, then a small mining community, killing nearly 30 people in the town.
The Lone Pine victims were buried in a mass grave on the north end of town, marked today with a sign.

Seven Victoria Crosses were awarded to the Australian force as a consequence of fighting at Lone Pine.
Unfortunately for the Allies the attack upon Line Pine proved far less diversionary than intended, for the Turkish reserves drafted in to defend Lone Pine were subsequently better placed to rush to the Sari Bair range once its importance became clearer.
