Lonesome Dove originated as a screenplay called The Streets of Laredo, which was intended as a vehicle for John Wayne, Henry Fonda and James Stewart.
This is followed by Wittliff's marked hardback and softback copies of the novel; by the notes, rough drafts, and typescripts for each of the four parts of the miniseries; and by the final shooting script with blue and pink pages reflecting revisions made just before and during shooting.
The drawings and plans for Lonesome Dove include a sketch of the town of Lonesome Dove, construction details for the Whiskey Boat, a map showing the path of the characters from Texas to Montana, a sketch of Clara's ranch and a sketch of the Montana ranch.

"Lonesome Dove" was as fine a miniseries as has ever been on, but it just dragged on and on with two sequels, a prequel, and one or two syndicated series following it.
Lonesome Dove is, quite simply, the best TV miniseries ever made, in any genre.
Return to Lonesome Dove at least had Schroder, outstanding once again as Newt, but the script was uneven.

As soon as I heard that this show was being made I found out that the author of Lonesome Dove had no connection to this one and warning flags came up in my mind.
Lonesome Dove is one of the most beloved mini-series in television history and folks this network sequel will never have that distinction.
This is no return to Lonesome Dove but rather a full fledged stampede away from Lonesome Dove and should not be confused with Larry McMurtry's official sequel "Streets Of Laredo" which has been turned into a two-part mini-series and is much better than this offering.

For many years I knew the story of Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry was loosely based on true accounts involving Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving, however, I did not know how close the similarities were.
While the characters in the story Lonesome Dove are uniquely McMurtry, many of their adventures are unquestionably based on varying historical accounts.
The final link connecting Lonesome Dove to the Goodnight-Loving story is also buried in the City Greenwood Cemetery, a fl cowboy by the name of Bose Ikard.

In my opinion (if anyone cares) the movie "Lonesome Dove" is the greatest Western classic of all time, based on the true accounts of Oliver Loving and Charles Goodnight.
If you remember "Lonesome Dove," you will remember the scene where Gus McRae and the old man are caught in an Indian attack.
The African-American character of Deets in "Lonesome Dove" is based on a real fl cowboy, one of many who worked for Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving over the years.

Lonesome Dove seems to have none of these stylistics, which is probably just as well since most of the Poledouris quirks seem very much orientated around sci-fi or action films.
The opening track features the gorgeous Theme from Lonesome Dove which is a broad, noble theme that makes for an enjoyable alternative to the more bouyant western themes that are so familiar.
This is a more talky and thoughtful approach to the genre, but the music is no less robust and enjoyable and this is certainly one of the finest western scores of the 90's and such unreservedly recommended.

What makes `Lonesome Dove' stand out proudly is not only its rich, panoramic beauty and intriguing story-lines, but its caring, sharply-defineated characters that keep this six-hour plus movie from ever wandering off.

Actually, I don't think there are enough positive words in the world that can sufficiently describe Lonesome Dove, the ultimate indulgence for fans of sweeping Americana.
The whole score exudes an air of majesty and grandeur, and Poledouris' trademarked huge orchestral style seems to be trying to musically embody the scale and beauty of the American west.
The 'Theme from Lonesome Dove' which opens the CD is quite simply one of the most beautiful pieces of music Basil Poledouris has ever written.
