Long Island has a climate that is very similar to other coastal areas of the Northeastern United States; it has warm, humid summers and cold winters, but the Atlantic Ocean helps bring afternoon sea breezes that temper the heat in the warmer months and limit the frequency and severity of thunderstorms.
In sequence from shallowest to deepest, the Long Island aquifers are: the Upper Glacial, the Magothy and the Lloyd Aquifers.
The West of Long Island was settled by the Dutch, and the East settled by Puritans from Massachusetts.

Long Beach Island is a barrier island along the Atlantic Ocean coast of Ocean County, New Jersey in the United States.
During the summer months, the island is a hotbed of tourist activity; Many in New Jersey and from the New York / Pennsylvania / Connecticut area own vacation homes referred to as "Beach Houses" that they themselves either summer in or rent out.
The island is also known as a base for many long-range recreational fishing and charter boats, whose trips can range from 10-100 miles from one of the island's three inlets (Barnegat, in the north, and Beach Haven and Little Egg in the south.)

Long Beach Island lies off the New Jersey Coast about 65 air miles south of Manhattan and 57 miles east and slightly south of Philadelphia.
The first inhabitants of Long Beach Island were the Lenni Lenape, or Delaware, members of the Algonkian linguistic family, that predominated in what is now the Northeast U.S. The Island was first mapped by the Dutch sailing from New Amsterdam.
The Island is divided into six townships; the largest, Long Beach, comprises all the territory outside the boundaries of the other five.
