She was the first "all-new" cruiser designed and constructed after World War II (all others were completions or conversions of cruisers begun or completed during the war).
The Long Beach served in the Atlantic Fleet from her commissioning in 1961 until completing her first refueling in early 1966, when the cruiser was transferred from the homeport of Norfolk, Virginia to Long Beach, California.
During this initial cruise, this cruiser served primarily as the Positive Identification Radar Advisory Zone (PIRAZ) unit in the northern Gulf of Tonkin.

Against the German pocket battleship (heavy cruiser) Graf Spee one heavy and two light British cruisers were able to split the fire of her heavier guns and although damaged, trail her to port where she was subsequently scuttled rather than risk battle again.
Cruisers were also attached to the main battlefleet and used for reconnaissance, sweeping ahead of the fleet looking for the enemy.
Light cruisers were defined to be armed with 6.1 in (155 mm) guns or smaller and heavy cruisers to be armed with larger calibers, 8 in (203 mm) being particularly common.

The Long Beach class cruiser is a single-ship class (sole member, USS Long Beach (CGN-9), ex-CGN-160, ex-CLGN-160) of the United States Navy.
The class is noted as the the world's first nuclear-powered surface combatant, and the last cruiser built in the US Navy to a cruiser design; all subsequent cruiser classes were built on scaled-up destroyer hulls.
The keel of the USS Long Beach was laid by Bethlehem Steel on 2 December 1957 at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts.

The first nuclear-powered surface warship in history, LONG BEACH was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet and home ported at Norfolk, Va. The guided-missile cruiser conducted extensive shakedown testing of her complex weapons and propulsion systems from 2 October to 16 December 1961; her superlative performance proved the nuclear cruiser a highly capable and effective warship.
LONG BEACH returned to Norfolk from this triumph 3 October to join in exercises off the east coast and in the Caribbean.
LONG BEACH arrived back at the west coast on 4 July where, after a well deserved period of rest, she resumed the exercises and operations which would keep her well prepared for her return to Vietnam the following year.

The Tiger class carries four Mk 41 VLS with two forward of the main superstructure on a raised deck and four aft of the hanger and helicopter pad.
The length of the heavy strike cruisers are virtually identical to that of the Long Beach but the new vessel has a wider beam for greater stability.
Long range missiles are normally used against large targets and aircraft further out where the medium range missiles will normally be used to engage closer targets.

Cruisers occupied the middle ranks to offer another layer of protection to the battleships at the core of the fleet and the battleships were given the task of obliterating the enemy's battleships.

In general, these cruisers are dual-role offensive/defensive ships, operating as defensive screens for major fleet units against enemy cruisers, hunting commerce raiders, raiding commerce themselves, offensive surface combatants, and served as flagships for squadrons of smaller cruisers.
The collision caused major fires aboard the cruiser, and her aluminum superstructure essentially melted; she was reduced to a badly burnt hulk.

Originally designated CLGN-160, Long Beach was redesignated CGN-160 on 6 December 1956; laid down 2 December 1957; redesignated CGN-9 1 July 1957 to fit the new guided missile cruiser series designation; launched 14 July 1959; and was commissioned 9 September 1961 as the world's first nuclear powered surface warship.
In January to February 1977, Long Beach, in company with Enterprise (CVN-65) and Truxtun (CGN-35) headed for the Indian Ocean conducting Exercise Merlion III en route with units of the Singapore armed forces.
Long Beach entered Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in January 1985 for a major overhaul during which her original Talos missile system was removed and Tomahawk armored box launchers installed.
