The Long Path was the vision of Vincent J. Schaefer of Schenectady, who proposed that New York establish its own "Long Path" similar to the Long Trail in Vermont.
Unlike the Long Trail, he saw the Long Path as an unmarked route meandering from the George Washington Bridge to Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondacks, connecting together a series of landmarks.

The County Board previously had set aside money for the project and approved conducting the study, but the study wasn't started yet, Space and Properties Committee Chairman Eugene Szymkowiak told the Por-tage County Board of Su-pervisors on Tuesday.
The county has taken tax deeds on those properties, and the 90-day deadline for Danczyk to repurchase those properties already has passed, according to county records.
Under the policy, no county employee can sign any document or correspondence for other employees or elected officials unless a signature authority form is on file with the county clerk.

The out-of-county solid waste haul agreement -- approved this week by the County Council -- means the County will be able to stop sending waste to the Oaks Landfill in Laytonsville by this fall and discontinue plans for development of the Site 2 landfill at Dickerson.
"It provides us with a cost-effective option for disposing of our ash and non-combustible materials, and it effectively enables us to close one County landfill and avoid the construction of another." Under the contract, approximately 150,000 tons per year of the County's ash and other waste materials would be transported to the landfill.
"The County Executive said he would do what he could to make sure that the County closes the Oaks Landfill as soon as possible, and he's done that." Jane Hunter, president of the Sugarloaf Citizens Association, said, "We are very pleased that the plan for out-of-county haul will be going forward.
