Long Island is connected to the mainland and the other island boroughs by a ribbon of vehicular bridges that cross the East River, the Verrazano Narrows Bridge (which connects to Staten Island), and several tunnels carrying motor vehicles and trains.
Long Island has a climate that is very similar to other coastal areas of the Northeastern United States; it has warm, humid summers and cold winters, but the Atlantic Ocean helps bring afternoon sea breezes that temper the heat in the warmer months and limit the frequency and severity of thunderstorms.
In sequence from shallowest to deepest, the Long Island aquifers are: the Upper Glacial, the Magothy and the Lloyd Aquifers.

Previously, the LIE was New York State Route 495 to the east of the Clearview Expressway (Interstate 295), but in the 1980s the NY 495 signs were taken down and I-495 extended to the east end of the LIE.
Exit 55A was meant to be a trumpet interchange for the Hauppauge Spur of NY 347, between Long Island Motor Parkway(Exit 55) and NY 111(Exit 56).
Many Long Island residents admit, thanks in part to recently finished construction of an HOV lane stretching from the Queens border to Exit 64, that the LIE tends to move better than the island's east-west parkways, the Northern State Parkway and the Southern State Parkway.

Long Island Expressway: Beginning at a point on the New York City line in the vicinity of the village of Lake Success, thence running generally easterly through or near the hamlet of Jericho to the Nassau-Suffolk county line in the vicinity of the hamlet of Plainview.
In 1962, the LIE east of the Clearview Expressway was changed from NY 24 to NY 495, for the purpose of consistency with the I-495 segment in Queens.

More work on the Long Island Expressway lies ahead for Modern's New York office, as two new contracts with the NYSDOT (New York State Department of Transportation) were won over the summer.
The first job, which was won in June with a low bid of $128 million, calls for roadway widening, reconstruction of shoulders and median, drainage work, milling and resurfacing of the LIE mainline, reconstruction of a bridge, fence and rail work, electrical work, utility relocation and replacement, concrete repair, and landscaping.
A second LIE job was won in August with a low bid of $107 million.
