Long Island is connected to the mainland and the other island boroughs by a ribbon of vehicular bridges that cross the East River, the Verrazano Narrows Bridge (which connects to Staten Island), and several tunnels carrying motor vehicles and trains.
Long Island has a climate that is very similar to other coastal areas of the Northeastern United States; it has warm, humid summers and cold winters, but the Atlantic Ocean helps bring afternoon sea breezes that temper the heat in the warmer months and limit the frequency and severity of thunderstorms.
In sequence from shallowest to deepest, the Long Island aquifers are: the Upper Glacial, the Magothy and the Lloyd Aquifers.

Long Island Railroad Co., 162 N.E.), was a decision by the New York Court of Appeals (the highest court in the state) written by Chief Judge Benjamin Cardozo, a leading figure in the development of American common law and later a Supreme Court justice.
A passenger carrying a package, while hurrying to catch and board a moving train, appeared to the Railroad's (Defendant's) employee to be falling.
Palsgraf sued the Railroad, claiming her injury resulted from negligent acts of the employee.

The Long Island Rail Road or LIRR (often referred to as the "L-I-double-R") is a commuter rail system serving the length of Long Island, New York.
The primary terminals are Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan and the Atlantic Terminal at the intersection of Flatbush Avenue and Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn; and a minor terminal is at Long Island City in Queens.
The Pennsylvania Railroad purchased the LIRR in 1901 and focused their attention on an East River tunnel and access to Manhattan rather than a port to Europe at the tip of Long Island.

 THE LONG ISLAND RAILROAD HISTORY
The Long Island Railroad started as part of the Pennsylvania Railroad and 1950 the transistion started to make the Long Island railroad a separate company which lasted until 1965 when the Metropolitan Transportation Authority took over the company.
The railroad had many different paint schemes during it's history and I hope to show most of them or at least describe the other paint schemes which the railroad tested or did use.

The Long Island Rail Road is the official name of the oldest Class 1 railroad still operating under its original name and charter (since 1834 - the B&O was older, having been chartered in 1827 and opened to traffic in 1830 but has been subsumed into CSX).
