  Japanese Torpedoes
The result was that Japanese torpedoes showed a steady progression of improvements throughout the 1930's, culminating in the devlopment of the famous 'Long Lance' in 1935.
Designing and perfecting the Long Lance required solving some extremely difficult technical problems, most of which centered around the usage of pure oxygen as a fuel (rather than compressed air).
Compressed air is nearly 77% nitrogen, which is useless for combustion, and also contributes to the visibility of the torpedo by leaving a bubble track on the surface.

CM Magazine:Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance: The Glorious Impersonator.
Long Lance was an American fl born in 1890 in North Carolina, who through the next four decades, until his suicide in 1932, assumed the persona of a full-blood Aboriginal (Canadian or American, as the story evolved).
Long Lance's story involved a number of settings and institutions in both Canada and the United States ranging from fl communities in the American south to Indian Reservations in Canada, and from an American military academy to the Canadian army.
In tracing Long Lance's remarkable life, Donald Smith has allowed that important story to be re-told to a new generation.

The Americans also had the advantage of radar although it, and its potential, were fairly new to the sailors using this wondrous weapon, so while it gave them the capability to see over the horizon, it was still an imperfect instrument.
The Long Lance was a brute, a 24” diameter at its bulbous nose, nearly 30 feet long; it weighed almost 3 tons and carried an explosive payload a shade over half-a-ton.
Not all were Long Lance because these monsters required special tubes and other equipment and at least two of the vessels, the Tenryu and the Yunagi, were as yet unfitted.

A long table flanked by benches, two rickety stools, a loom, and a straight-backed rocking chair completed the furnishings.
Zach's mind drifted with the new-smoke and was gradually pulled back to the long room by the aroma of cooking food, and by the bustling of the woman as she set the table with bread, drinking gourds, and wooden bowls.
He was so tired that he ached, but it was a long time before he fell asleep; when he did, he dreamed that he was lost in a snowbank, hands and feet turning blue, while needles of ice fell from the sky around him.

 myArmoury.com: From Lance to Pistol
This paradigm of the man-at-arms in full armour wielding a heavy lance began to be challenged in the mid-1540s with the introduction in Germany of a new invention-the wheellock pistol.
In some cases a Lance could consist of upwards of 700 men, but in the later days of the Italian Wars, the Lance was reduced to only the actual man-at-arms and an attendant mounted on a nag and not expected to fight in the line of battle.
With the pistol effectively being used as a long-range lance, cavalry could reduce the front rank of their opponents before the actual physical contact of the two forces, allowing them to use their weight of numbers in column to punch through the already thin, and now much reduced, line of lancers.

 Knight - Wikihack
Since in the weapon charts lance seems to do less damage than the long sword and there is no lance artifact weapon, people playing knights tend to discard the lance and rely on the long sword.
In fact an unencumbered Knight with boots of speed and a lance is possibly the only character who can kill Demogorgon in loyal combat without resorting to tricks like polymorphing into basilisk: just joust him: he will not be able to attack a second time or teleport before the Knight finishes him.
At high skill levels the lance is ideal for dealing with situations where you find youself surrounded: every joust (and you will be getting a lot of them) will push a monster one square away, meaning there is one less monster who will attack you this round and possibly allowing you to slip away.

Runner's & Triathlete's Web - Carmichael Training Systems Training: Going Long - By Lance ...
Long rides and runs are important because training slowly and for longer periods of time allows for your body to develop in two key ways.
Determining the optimal time/mileage for a long workout depends on the athlete's current level of fitness, their ability at handling mileage, and the length of the races they will be doing.
Long rides should be built up to 3.5 hours in the base phase and held around 2.5 to 3 hours in season (elites to 4 hours in base phase and 3-3.5 in season).

In the early 90s, Lance Harrison and Donna Howley became known to Nashville R&B audiences as "Lance & Donna" and had settled into a comfortable life as musicians and owners of a demo/recording studio off of the city's fabled Music Row.
But in 1992, their life was jolted by an unexpected blow that would leave them without a home or business and send them on a quest of renewed discovery for the roots of the Blues.
Lance & Donna's emphasis on pre-war Blues is reflected in Lance's style and interpretation, as well as his original compositions.

Lance Armstrong's heart is almost a third larger than that of an average man. During those rare moments when he is at rest, it beats about thirty-two times a minute—slowly enough so that a doctor who knew nothing about him would call a hospital as soon as he heard it.
His thigh bones are unusually long, for example, which permits him to apply just the right amount of torque to the pedals.
Three types of riders succeed in long stage races like the Tour de France: those who excel at climbing but are only adequate in time trials, in which a cyclist races alone against the clock; those who can win time trials but struggle in the mountains; and cyclists who are moderately good at both.
