DAILY FILM DOSE: A Daily Film Appreciation and Review Blog: THE LONG TAKE
This shot is one of a series of long extended takes in the film – equally impressive is the rescue of the baby in the refugee camp at the end of the film.
Some of the long takes you mentioned are dominated by photography, which makes it easier on actors unaccustomed to live performance.
The acting in Children of Men's long takes struck me as stiff, tentative, self-conscious, as if the cast were trying too hard not to make mistakes, perhaps because they're not primarily stage actors, accustomed to having only one shot at being "in the moment" in front of an audience.

Perhaps the long take is equivalent to the slow movements of the symphonic or sonata form.
Serra takes the long take almost to an extreme as he shows Don Quixote and Sancho Panza doing nothing, or rather, he shows them ‘thinking', which is one of the main points of the film.
The long take is now used in so-called "art movies" almost as much as shot-reverse-shot is in conventional films, well or badly depending on the quality of the director and its connection to the subject.

Long take - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
A long take is an uninterrupted shot in a film which lasts much longer than the conventional editing pace either of the film itself or of films in general, usually lasting at least several minutes.
Some films, like Rope, Russian Ark, Before Sunset, Elephant, and Irréversible are composed entirely of long takes, while others like Goodfellas, Boogie Nights, Touch of Evil, The Player, or Funny Games are well-known for a specific long take or two within otherwise typically edited films.
The term "long take" is used because it avoids the ambiguous meanings of "long shot", which can refer to the framing of a shot, and "long cut", which can refer to either a whole version of a film or the general editing pacing of the film.

Visual Style in M. Night Shyamalan’s “Fantastic” Trilogy, Part 1: The Long Take
The use of the long take during such as scene (and at 2’53” this is the second longest shot in the film) is consistent with the way Shyamalan used the long take to underscore intimate moments in The Sixth Sense.
Another ‘intimacy’ long take occurs at 68’20” (44”), during a scene where Merrill, Bo, and Morgan watch a television news broadcast in the walk-in closet (in an earlier scene Merrill had moved the television, with its constant news bulletins of the alien attacks, from the living room into the closet to “protect the children”).
Signs’ penultimate long take sequence shot dissolves to the film’s final shot, another impressive long take sequence shot which represents another common element among the three films (the ‘one scene/one cut’[5] style is most prominent in Unbreakable).

One thing I've often said about long takes such as these is that they can instill anxiety in today's viewers; we're so used to quick takes in most films and in TV shows that, when we see a long take, we keep expecting it to cut.
