  Winning the Long War: Prologue
For us, the Long Telegram has more immediate relevance, for what cannot be debated is that within the final three paragraphs—a mere three hundred and fifty words—is America’s survival guide for dealing with the security challenges of the twenty-first century.
Long wars usually centralize power in the state and in the long run diminish it by crushing innovation, stifling liberty, and inefficiently employing resources.
The Soviets were, he pointed out in the Long Telegram, “by far the weaker force.” Thus, Kennan argued that it was critical that the United States not overreach and unnecessarily diminish itself against an enemy that could not win in the long term.

George Kennan "The Sources of Soviet Conduct" (1946)
The Long Telegram was perhaps the most cited and most influential statement of the early years of the Cold War.
The essence of Kennan's telegram was published in Foreign Affairs in 1947 as The Sources of Soviet Conduct and circulated everywhere.
As long as remnants of capitalism were officially recognized as existing in Russia, it was possible to place on them, as an internal element, part of the blame for the maintenance of a dictatorial form of society.

 Long Beach Press - Telegram
LONG BEACH - When 22-year-old Sadiqa Basiri recently opened a school for women inside her native Afghanistan, several curious townspeople approached to ask her what she meant when she used the terms math and geography.
Basiri, along with five women from India, Nepal and Pakistan, were in Long Beach this weekend to share their experiences working as female educators and activists in nations where educated women mostly are frowned upon.
The women acknowledged that it can be dangerous working for the rights of women, children and the poor in regions of the world where those groups are openly and frequently discriminated against.

Kennan's Long Telegram and NSC-68: A Comparative Analysis
George Kennan discussed in his telegram three issues: the principal motivating factors behind Soviet foreign policy, and the historical and ideological background of the post-war Soviet perception of international relations; its attainment on both the official and the unofficial level; and, finally, the far-reaching repercussions for the US foreign policy.
The Long Telegram did not constitute the first attempt made by Kennan to discuss the nature of the Bolshevist political regime.(13) Nevertheless, it was not so clear-cut a piece of work; rather, it was full of ambiguities.
The thesis could admittedly be borne out by the Long Telegram that Kennan was strongly convinced that the Soviet leaders dogmatically adhered to the perception of the lethal capitalist-socialist struggle.

Encyclopedia: Containment   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
A strategy is a long term plan of action designed to achieve a particular goal, as differentiated from tactics or immediate actions with resources at hand.
The anticipated result is that, due to the isolation, any subversion introduced will have a high cost and will take a long time to rectify if left alone, or will consume resources (particularly in the form of security measures) to avoid.
The policy was first laid out in George F. Kennan's famous long telegram.

 George Kennan's "Long Telegram"
Without it they would stand before history, at best, as only the last of that long succession of cruel and wasteful Russian rulers who have relentlessly forced country on to ever new heights of military power in order to guarantee external security of their internally weak regimes.
As long as UNO is considered here to serve this purpose, Soviets will remain with it.
If large scale long term credits should be forthcoming, I believe Soviet Government may eventually again do lip service, as it did in 1930's to desirability of building up international economic exchanges in general.

The Agonist | George Kennan's Long Telegram: A Study in Realism
The "Long Telegram" of February 22nd, 1946 is a landmark in post-World War II thinking, and an example of how foreign policy writing ought to be done.
The long telegram was merely classified as "secret" at the time, and was in reponse to a previous series of questions from the State Department.
It should be read by everyone who has a stake in the current conflicts with terrorism, totalitarianism and feudal mercantilism which drive a host of enemies in their campaign against the West.

This has become known as 'the Long Telegram', and it said exactly what the American government wanted it to.
His telegram was re-written as a paper entitled: The Sources of Soviet Conduct, and read by many Americans.
This thesis provides justification for that increase of military and police power of Russian state, for that isolation of Russian population from outside world, and for that fluid and constant pressure to extend limits of Russian police power which are together the natural and instinctive urges of Russian rulers.

CNN Cold War - Historical Document: Novikov's telegram
The Soviet ambassador in Washington, Nikolai Novikov, drafted this telegram in September 1946 stressing the dangers of possible U.S. economic and military domination worldwide.
In his telegram, Novikov attempted to interpret U.S. foreign policy for his superiors, much the same way George F. Kennan had done in his "Long Telegram" to the State Department earlier that year.
They calculated that the United States of America, if it was unsuccessful in completely avoiding direct participation in the war, would enter it only at the last minute, when it could easily affect the outcome of the war, completely ensuring its interests.
