  The Long Wave Gold Cycle
He summarized these findings saying that "During the period of a rising wave in the long cycles, the intermediate capitalist cycles are characterized by the brevity of depressions and the intensity of the upswings.
During the period of a downward wave in the long cycles, the picture is the opposite.

  Whole Earth: The Long Wave
That necessity is the central cause of the long wave.
In Forrester's model the long wave period is fifty to sixty years because of the combined delays of capital build-up and depreciation in both the consumer-goods and capital sectors, with the added delay of capital self-ordering.
The long wave trough is the time to ease the lot of the poor, tax away the uninvestable excess of the rich, and run deficits.

 In the Long Wave Trough
In 1992, Professor John Sterman of MIT wrote an article titled, "Long Wave Decline and the Politics of Depression." The article dealt with the discovery that Professor Jay Forrester and others at MIT made in the ‘70s when applying their new technique of systems thinking to the economy as a whole.
Based on the Long Wave theory as produced by Sterman and others, we know we are in the trough of the Long Wave—the period after a long decline but before a new uptrend has started.
Since that time we have not needed all that capacity, and the decline in the Long Wave is mostly the result of excess capacity.

Roger's Opinions: Long Wave: political and social cycles and World Systems Theory
Following the Long Wave global war cycle from the 17th century (world systems school of thought from Wallerstein and Modelski), by the mid-2020s or so, the US may actually have to face down China in a genuine shooting war.
The US may actually win the battle(s) but ultimately lose the war and the peace, as this period may be when China assumes her role as the economic and military peer of the US, whereas the US will then face decades of struggle to remain a force regional power.
By the 2050s-60s, then, according to the Long Wave, world systems school progression of great powers, the US will have changed so dramatically in ethnic composition and economic power that she will surrender her hegemony for good in the decades thereafter.

 Valuation Wave Reversion
Last week in “Long Valuation Waves” we used a century of data to determine that the mean P/E ratio and dividend yield for the US equity markets are about 14x and 4.6%.
The Long Valuation Wave mean reversion has begun, and investors truly need to understand that we are already well into the season of declining stock market valuations and they need to deploy and protect their precious capital accordingly.
A Long Valuation Wave takes about 33 years, so any predictions on future valuations for US equity markets using less than a third of a century of data are bound to be horribly flawed.

CCALMR Results: International Workshop on Long-Wave Runup Models
(1994) conclude that, for islands with size of the same order of magnitude of the wavelength of an incident wave, trapped waves are formed in each side of the island, and their collision behind the island leads to substantial magnification of the wave amplitude near shore and to significant flow runup onto the beach.
The ratio of the maximum wave height in the back and in the front of the island decreases as we progress from case A to case C (Figures 2.5a-c), i.e., suggesting decreasing magnification as the period of the incident wave decreases.
The trailing wave train generated when viscosity is low might result from the fact that the shallow water equations cannot sustain the form of a solitary wave.

Kondratiev wave - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In economics, Kondratiev waves, also called grand supercycles or surges or long waves, occasionally also referred to as the K-waves, are the term for a regular S-shaped cycle in the modern (Capitalist) world economy.
The Marxist scholar Ernest Mandel revived interest in long wave theory with his 1964 essay predicting the end of the long boom after five years and in his Alfred Marshall lectures in 1979.
Long wave theory is not accepted by most neo-classical ("standard textbook") economists, who necessarily see technical change and innovation as exogenous rather than endogenous to economics, but it is one of the bases of innovation-based, development, and evolutionary economics, i.e.

Kondratieff Long Wave Cycles Past and Present
Kondratieff's major premise was that capitalist economies displayed long wave cycles of boom and bust ranging between 50-60 years in duration.
Many have argued as to whether the Kondratieff wave is valid for the post WW2 economy given the fiscal and monetary tools of a modern economy.
But what the Kondratieff wave is about is a study of long cycles of debt buildup and repudiation.

 The Kondratieff Wave
Hyde's view is that the real basis of the long cycle has been missed - because it is too obvious and humbling in the same sense in which the Copernican theory (we're not the center of the universe) was humbling relative to the Ptolemaic theory (we are the center of the universe).
He sees Kondratieff long waves as cycles of balance and surplus in the supply of labor relative to the supply of employment.
So, the long wave is primarily a matter of 70-80 year tides of technology and workweek length, and of alternating centripetal and centrifugal forces on wealth.

Suspended sediment and hydrodynamics above mildly sloped long wave ripples
We investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of suspended sediment and the associated hydrodynamics over mildly sloped long wave ripples on the inner shelf.
The vertical and temporal structures of the suspended sediment concentration (SSC) are consistent with the entrainment of sediment on the offshore flank of the ripple, and rapid vertical mixing at the time of flow reversal, followed by advection onshore by the onshore fluid motion.
Numerical simulations of the flow using the Dune2d model indicate that a separated rotational flow structure is generated at the flank of the ripple on the seaward side of the ripple crest, near the time of flow reversal.

All of this was in accordance with both conventional economic ideas of inter-market relatedness and more particularly with the Long Wave of Kondratieff's approximately 27 year economic rising cycle phase.
Instead of the classical theory of Kondratieff which promised reduced growth, lower rates, lower prices, as excess capacity and demand were worked off, the new "Spenglerians" developed a theory that the West was past its peak, world revolution was occurring, and a dismal period of the total liquidation of Western economies was straight ahead.

Human population facing long wave variability: an ecological approach   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Abstract: It is proposed that long wave economic cycles are related to natural variability, and thus we might only be able to properly manage the ecosystem by combining our understanding of the sources and mechanisms of that natural variability to our limited social and economic planning capabilities.
Other lines of thinking believe that long wave behaviour is caused by fluctuations in the growth rate of the population as noted by the work force.
The pragmatic economists point of view is that whatever causes this long wave cycles is not the main point, but knowing they exist and consider them for economic planning and analyses.

After understanding the “long” part of these waves, internalizing the “valuation” part is the next key to this critically important puzzle.

 Brain As Matter-Wave
Hence, one wave (or one side of the strand of DNA) may be vibrating up and down, whilst the other side (or strand) might be vibrating at an out-of-phase oblique angle, thereby forcing the two wave systems when connected to take on the shape and form of the double helix.
Indeed, all mechanical waves (and a nerve cell is precisely defined by a wave) need a push or kick for the wave to begin their oscillations.
Brain waves can be understood to be generalized imbalances in the frequency of the resonance's occurring in the brain.

 Electromagnetic Spectrum - Introduction
Radiation is energy that travels and spreads out as it goes-- visible light that comes from a lamp in your house or radio waves that come from a radio station are two types of electromagnetic radiation.
Radio waves, visible light, X-rays, and all the other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum are fundamentally the same thing.
Electromagnetic radiation can be described in terms of a stream of photons, which are massless particles each traveling in a wave-like pattern and moving at the speed of light.
