The 2 species are sympatric on the coast, elsewhere they don't overlap.
The Pangani Longclaw has buffy vice yellow coloured flanks and the throat is orange-yellow in colour.

A large robust pipit, the Cape Longclaw (Macronyx capensis), also known as the Orange-throated Longclaw, is a common resident of the "veld" (grasslands) of southern Africa (South Africa, Rhodesia).
Yet the two groups of birds are not closely related: the former belongs to a group of primarily Old-world species, the pipits and wagtails (Motacillidae), while the latter belongs to a diverse group of nine-primaried songbirds mostly from the Americas that includes buntings and wood warblers.

The grassland areas are normally good all year round for Croaking Cisticola, Yellowthroated Longclaw and Greyrumped Swallow.
In the more moist summer months Pinkthroated Longclaw can be flushed from the shallow grassy edges of pans.

It is very similar to the Pangani Longclaw (found in the East of the country) but they can be told apart by the extent of the yellow colouring.

We were seeing various color morphs of Yellow Wagtail in abundance and plenty of Slaty Egret, but it took a while to locate a longclaw.
When one of these birds finally flushed just ahead of us, rising in longclaw fashion with lots of apparently ineffectual fluttering of wings, resulting in its typical short, laboring flight, yours truly's face must have been a study in delight.
What makes this notable is the fact that the two birds are not related, the longclaws belonging to the wagtail and pipit family, while meadowlarks are related to New World flbirds, cowbirds and orioles.

The grassland next to the vleis are home to Yellowbacked Widow and in some areas Orangethroated Longclaw, Yellowthroated Longclaw and Pinkthroated Longclaw can be found.

The lark field is private property and should not be entered without permission - therefore access should always be arranged via the Birdlife International office, or via John McAllister (see the references section).
We got a pair of Southern White-bellied Korhaans after about 1.5 km in the field on the right side of the road, and we found Melodious Lark in song a bit further along the road (about 5 km from the turnoff).
Note that Pink-throated Longclaw occurs on the floodplains of the reserve, but these are not freely accessible.
