Longdendale is a valley mainly in the Derbyshire Peak District in the north west of England, north of Glossop and south east of Holmfirth.
Until 1974, Longdendale was the easternmost extension of the county palatine of Chester.
The lordship of Longdendale was an ancient feudal estate based on the manor of Mottram, Buckton castle (in the neighbouring Tame valley) and the borough of Tintwistle.

Described as a ‘waste’ in the Domesday Book and given to William Peveril by William the Conqueror, Longdendale became part of the Royal Forest of the Peak in the 12th century.
From the middle ages, salt was brought from Northwich, Middlewich and Nantwich on pack horses up through Longdendale to Salter’s Brook, where one track went on to Sheffield and the other headed north to Wakefield.
Today the Longdendale reservoirs are North West Water’s fifth largest resource, supplying some 102 megalitres of water each day to the eastern part of Manchester.

The Longdendale valley is surrounded by high plateaux of blanket peat, which drain into the valley by a series of streams, like this one running into Torside Reservoir.
Bramah Edge and Long Gutter Edge to the south of the Torside Reservoir occur in the Torside area - these are a result of glaciation.
Torside Clough to the south side of Longdendale however, has cut deep into the underlying grits, creating a deep gully (clough), with a graded junction with the main valley, resulting in impressive scenery.

This is Woodhead Reservoir in the Longdendale Valley.
The Longdendale Valley has a reputation as a place of supernatural phenomena including ghostly sightings, UFOs and the mysterious Longdendale Lights.
The mysterious and some say haunted Longdendale Valley has since ancient times been part of my home county of Cheshire, a fact obscured by 1974 boundary changes which placed it within a redrawn administrative county of Derbyshire and the borough of High Peak.
