Beetles of North America - Cirrus Digital Imaging
Beetles are the dominant form of life on earth: one of every five living species is a beetle, and one fourth of all animals are beetles.
The name coleoptera means "sheath wings." Most beetles have large prominent compound eyes, and there are many different types of beetle antennae: threadlike, clubbed, antennae with leaf-like structures at the tip, so-called longhorn beetles with antennae up to 2 1/2 times their body length.
The Asian Longhorned beetle is a newly introduced species to North America; its discovery in New York State and near Chicago Illinois in the late 1990's necessitated the destruction of thousands of trees in order to stop its spread.

Beetles can be found in almost all habitats, but are not known to occur in the sea or in the polar regions.
Beetles are generally characterised by a particularly hard exoskeleton, and the hard wing-cases (elytra) which tend to cover the hind part of the body and protect the second wings, the alae.
In these beetles the testes are tubular and the first abdominal sternum (a plate of the exoskeleton) is divided by the hind coxae (the basal joints of the beetle's legs).

 Bedfordshire Longhorn Beetles
Longhorn beetles are a small but distinctive group of generally large beetles called the Cerambycidae, which, as you would expect from the common name, have long antennae, often as long as, or longer than, the body.
Longhorns are usually long-legged with elongated bodies and the elytra (wing-cases) come in an attractive range of colours and patterns.
Longhorns may thus be indicators of the quality and maturity of woodland.

The Asian longhorn beetle is a native of SE Asia where it is a major problem on broadleaved trees, especially in China.
The larval stages of Asian longhorn beetles are well protected within untreated wood and, therefore, it is possible for the beetle to be carried in international trade and to emerge at the final destination.

The longhorn beetle females first girdle the spurge plant stem, draining the latex, which is toxic to the larvae.
Olson believes the best role of the longhorn beetle may be as a complement to other control methods, keeping stands of leafy spurge at low levels after they have been reduced by other means.
There is considerable interest in the longhorn beetles in areas where leafy spurge is bad and the flea beetles have not been effective, Olson says.

Citrus Longhorn Beetles found in Shropshire
The citrus longhorn beetle is a quarantine-listed pest that could pose a threat to trees in the UK and a small number of adult beetles, believed to be citrus longhorns, were found emerging from a potted Japanese acer/maple tree in a private garden in Hadley, on Tuesday 4th July.
Beetles are large, 21-37mm long (about 1-1.5 inches), excluding the antennae, and fl with variable white markings on their backs.
If you spot a beetle that you suspect is a citrus longhorn beetle, trap it if possible and report the finding to the local office of the Plant Health and Seed Inspectorate (PHSI) on 01743 358333 or the PHSI HQ, York on 01904 455174 as soon as possible.

Longhorn beetles (family Cerambidae) are characterized by somewhat elongate, cylindrical bodies with long antennae, often more than 2/3 of the body length.
The beetle's current distribution is patchy throughout the remaining riparian forests of the Central Valley from Redding to Bakersfield.
The valley elderberry longhorn beetle, though wide-ranging, is in long-term decline due to human activities that have resulted in widespread alteration and fragmentation of riparian habitats, and to a lesser extent, upland habitats, which support the beetle.

The valley elderberry longhorn beetle (beetle) is completely dependent on its host plant, elderberry (Sambucus species), which is a common component of the remaining riparian forests and adjacent upland habitats of California’s Central Valley.
If suitable habitat for the beetle occurs on the project site, or within close proximity where beetles will be affected by the project, these areas must be designated as avoidance areas and must be protected from disturbance during the construction and operation of the project.
The population of valley elderberry longhorn beetles, the general condition of the conservation area, and the condition of the elderberry and associated native plantings in the conservation area must be monitored over a period of either ten (10) consecutive years or for seven (7) years over a 15-year period.

 Asian long-horned beetle Summary
The Asian long-horned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis), sometimes called Starry Sky (Sky Oxen in China) beetle, is native to China and Korea where it causes widespread mortality of poplar, willow, elm, and maple throughout vast areas of eastern Asia.
The Asian longhorned beetle, though native to China, saw a population boom from the late '70s to early '90s due to the planting of poplar tree farms to supply materials for shipping crates and packing in the burgeoning trade with foreign countries.
The Asian longhorned beetle was believed to have arrived in New York City in the 1980s from wooden packing material.

Polyphaga is by far the largest suborder, containing 85% of the known species, including rove beetles, scarabs, stag beetles, metallic wood-boring beetles, click beetles, fireflies, blister beetles, mealworms, ladybirds, leaf beetles, longhorn beetles, and weevils.
Evidence for the alternative hypothesis, that Polyphaga is the sister group to remaining beetles, is based primarily on characters of wing structure, and on the loss of the cervical sclerites in the three suborders other than Polyphaga (Lawrence and Newton, 1982; Kukalová-Peck and Lawrence, 1993).
The composition of the clade Coleoptera is not in dispute, with the exception of the twisted-wing parasites, Strepsiptera.
