Longleat Railway has been running for 42 years, and at the moment seems to be the busiest tourist railway in the UK.

  Longleat House
Longleat has worked hard to create a reputation as a major family attraction, with a plethora of theme park activities and the world-famous safari park, but at its core the estate still revolves around the superb Elizabethan country house.
Among the many purpose-built attractions which surround the house at Longleat are the world's largest hedge maze, a miniature railway, a petting zoo, a mirror maze, Dr Who exhibit, Butterfly Gardens, Postman Pat Village, and Adventure Castle.
Longleat is heaven for families; there is so much to do that the only problem will be trying to fit it all in.

The upkeep of the four hundred year old Longleat House was hugely expensive, and although Lord Bath had been the first peer to open his home to the public in 1949, the hundred thousand visitors or so who came to the house each year were not sufficient to cover the burgeoning costs.
The first animal reserve at Longleat is a massive sixty acre rolling pasture where visitors are encouraged to leave their cars and walk or picnic among the animals.
It was seen as little more than a outdoor circus, and Chipperfield was seen as an opponent of the new ideals that zoos were seeking to achieve, a reversion to a crude commercial exploitation of animals.

Perhaps Longleat came to the fore when it hosted the ' TWENTY YEARS OF A TIMELORD' celebration in 1983 attended by all the living Doctors and most companions ever gathered for such an event.
It was on a sad note that the Longleat Exhibition closed its doors for the final time in October 2003 after serving Dr Who fans for almost 30 years.
