Longtime Companion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Longtime Companion is a 1990 film with Bruce Davison, Campbell Scott, and Mary-Louise Parker.
The film ends in 1989, with the once large group of friends reduced to a gay couple, and one of the men's sisters, who is working to defend the civil rights of persons infected with the virus, and volunteering to help out Haitian heterosexual drug users that have become infected.
Longtime Companion was the first widely-released film on the subject of AIDS.

Review of LONGTIME COMPANION by Bill Warren
They've been together for four years now, and are obviously content that they have found the companion for the rest of their lives, but David, who's a bit shallow, still eyes handsome young guys on the beach.
Their friends Willy (Campbell Scott) and John (Dermot Mulroney), longtime friends but not lovers, are visiting, and the same weekend, Willy begins a romance with Fuzzy (Stephen Caffrey), a shaggy young man visiting this predominately gay resort on Long Island.
The title, "Longtime Companion," is the euphemism for "lover" used in obituaries of gays, but it also, bitterly, refers to the disease AIDS itself.

Norman Rene's "Longtime Companion" is a film that begins on the day when an obscure story in the New York Times first mentions a disease that seems to be striking homosexual men, and it ends after AIDS has profoundly affected all of their lives - mostly, but not entirely, for the worse.
The emphasis is on the notion of "longtime." During the course of the movie some characters will fall in love and others will break up, but most of them will be steadfast in their friendships and they will stand by each other in a series of crises.
One of the particular strengths of "Longtime Companion" is that it does not identify its characters only through their sexual preferences.

 DVDork.com - Longtime Companion Review
Longtime Companion takes the exact opposite track: it’s focus lays squarely on how the disease goes from being a short news story in the back of the newspaper to being the dominating force in a group of friends.
Longtime Companion is rated R, but that’s more for adult situations and mild language than it is for nudity.
Longtime Companion is a fine film unduly overlooked by both the MPAA with a harsh rating and MGM with a pedestrian DVD.

 ‘Longtime Companion’ (R)
There's a quiet apocalypse going on in "Longtime Companion" that is subtly but utterly devastating.
Looked at clinically (as AIDS all too frequently is), "Companion" has certain dramatic shortcomings, and is rife with propaganda.
With the exception of an episode in which a Latino AIDS patient is sullen and resentful towards his volunteer "buddy," the characters tend to band around each other a little too didactically, and seem far better people than many of us.

Longtime Companion begins on July 3, 1981, the day that the New York Times printed its first major story about a rare disease, Kaposi's sarcoma, which was affecting gay men.
Until the release of Philadelphia (see annotation) in 1994, Longtime Companion was the only feature-length film to deal explicitly with AIDS.
Longtime Companion has been justly criticized for the absence of safer sex information--decreasing risk is equated with enacting monogamy--and the sentimentality of its ending.

Sun has binary partner, may affect the Earth
Author and theorist, Walter Cruttenden, presents the evidence that this binary orbit relationship may be the cause of a vast cycle causing the Dark and Golden Ages common in the lore of ancient cultures.
The phenomenon known as the precession of the equinox, fabled as a marker of time by ancient peoples, is not due to a local wobbling of the Earth as modern theory portends, but to the solar system's gentle curve through space.
This movement of the solar system occurs because the Sun has a companion star; both stars orbit a common center of gravity, as is typical of most double star systems.

In the movie's beach scene, Fuzzy was clean-shaven, and wearing a tee shirt that read "Read my lips" with a picture of two men kissing.
At the time of Longtime Companion's release in 1990, the devastating disease of AIDS was seen as a mysterious and deadly scourge, replete with rumors, lies, and panic.
As the first narrative film to examine the AIDS epidemic, screenwriter Craig Lucas and director Norman René place the disease in an historical context, dramatizing the impact of the disease through time in a series of vignettes involving seven gay men.

LONGTIME COMPANION (1990) Director: Norman Rene Stars: Bruce Davison, Campbell Scott, Dermot Mulroney
Though Longtime Companion suffers from excessive sentimentality and doesn’t contain a single complicated or contradictory character, it’s not at all the train wreck you fear it’s going to be.
It’s not a movie masterpiece, but it is moving, overall, and there are scenes involving the physical and mental decay of gay men with AIDS in the pre-combo therapy eighties that are compelling.
It is a dopey ending, but in many ways, appropriate for this film, which, because it can’t get any kind of real handle on the Sodom and Gomorrah doom and gloom of its subject, has packaged the whole thing with suburban familiarity, filming it in the style of a 1980s TV mini-series.

Longtime Companion-The screenwriter, Craig Lucas, and the director, Norman René, track the effects of AIDS on the lives of eight people: seven gay men and a straight woman who is a lifelong friend of one of the men.
The filmmakers focus on one day in each year of the epidemic, from 1981 through 1989, and the mournful progress of the decade is expressed by the gaps between the annual episodes: the cast of characters keeps getting smaller, and at the end only the woman and three of the men are left.
Set during the late 70's and on into the 80's the film is a bare bones and ruthlessly truthful before-and-after portrait of the devastating effects of the AIDS virus on a small group of close friends/lovers and on the wider gay community.

LONGTIME COMPANION is the story of one small group of friends who are affected by an unknown and dreadful disease; and it shows how each of them responds to the challenges thrown at them.
There are a great many gay themed films available today, but when Longtime Companion was released, it was but one of a small handful of films brave enough to paint gay characters with empathetic and intelligent brushstrokes - something that continues to beset filmmakers even today.

My screenwriting professors at college asked me to see this movie while I was at school; they knew I was sympathetic and would be open to its emotional honesty as an example of how drama should be written.
Longtime Companion chronicles the lives and (sometimes) deaths of four gay male couples over the span of the 80's, as the AIDS virus spreads among their crowd.
However, unlike in soaps (which tend to allow the music and flatulent dialogue to take over every dramatic point in the scene), Longtime Companion relies on an accessibility to human emotions rather than a forced sense of guilt for humanity.

One of the first American films to address the AIDS crisis, Longtime Companion is an exceptional look into the lives of a group of gay friends, and how the disease affects them, both collectively and singularly.
Director René and writer Craig Lucas succeed in creating full-dimensioned characters and the film is rich in sharp observations and keen wit.
There is a terrific ensemble cast, but Davison must be given a special mention for his superlative portrayal of the lover who slowly watches his longtime companion succumb.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT A group of friends must come to terms with the ''gay plague'' striking almost everyone they know and love in the early '80s.
WHAT WE SAID THEN '''Longtime Companion' presents the onslaught of AIDS as a series of increasingly ominous rituals, from the anxious reading of newspaper reports to the funerals that come to seem more and more inevitable.
The film gives us an intimate view of those who are stricken and those who can do little but stand by and watch them deteriorate.'' B+ (Full review, 5/11/90)
