Longton was at the end of a lane which ran from Tunstall to a village at the end of the lane, hence Longton was known as Lane End, and colloquially as 'Neck End'.
LANE END and LONGTON are two townships, forming a populous and thriving market town, in the parish of Stoke; situate at the southern extremity of the Potteries, four miles south east from Newcastle, on the road between that town and Uttoxeter.

As stated, Longton is the newest of the six towns to evolve but its evolution has been innovative and inspired even though it had a poor reputation as a dwelling place.
Longton, Lane End and Normacot were still distinct areas at this time and, although the author has no accurate population figures, there must have been few people populating the district which by 1738 still only had a Longton/ Lane End population figure of around 500.
Longton was evolving and people with vision and a healthy competitive nature were in the driving seat.

This rapidly improving town is extensively engaged in the china and earthenware manufacture, and is pleasantly situated in the bosom and on the sides of the valley of a small rivulet.
The population of Longton in 1841 was 10,393, and Lane-End, 1,952, so that the chief part of the town is in the manor of Longton, although, until about ten years ago, the town was popularly called Lane-End.

Longton Hall also housed soldiers and I'm sure many will remember during the first years of the war, a Western Lysander plane flying very low over Longton Hall, dropping a green flare every morning as we children were on our way to School.
Longton had only one land mine dropped over the marsh by a plane unloading its ammunition on the way back to Germany.
