 Longues Battery
The Longues Battery, built on the cliff top beyond the village of Longues sur Mer, was part of the Atlantic Wall defences in Normandy.
Despite bombardment, they were able to fire at Allied shipping on D Day, until the position was captured by 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment who had come inland from Gold Beach.
After the Second World War, most Atlantic Wall defences were dismantled, but the guns at Longues were not removed - today making it one of the few battery sites to remain pretty much intact.

The Battery is compound of a commandbunker (type M262a), with a telemetry room and four heavy bunkers (Type M272).

The coastal Battery at Longues sur Mer formed an important part of the Atlantic Wall, built by the Germans to defend Europe in the event of an Allied landing.
The gunemplacements are still at their original locations (sadly, most guns are pointed at the ground, only one is pointed at the sea as it was during the events of June 6th 1944), and can be visited unaided or with a guide.

Since we spent too much time at the Longues Battery, the American Cemetery was closing as we arrived - he came back the next day and spent another half day with us at no additional charge.
Also very new is the Juno Beach Centre(Canadian) in Courselles sur Mer(we stayed for two night in this town)It was a never to be forgotten trip.
