Lonnie Donegan MBE (April 29, 1931 - November 4, 2002), the King of Skiffle and 'first real British pop superstar' shot to fame in 1956, when Rock Island Line sold an unprecedented 3 million copies, shooting into the British and American top ten.
Lonnie's 1955 breakthrough hit 'Rock Island Line' has been voted #38 in MOJO Magazine's '100 Records That Changed the World' poll, by a cross-selection of prominent rock and roll musicians.
Lonnie was a great vocal phraser, he swung from the off.

Lonnie Donegan was at the height of his popularity and I decided that I wanted a Skiffle Group, so I recruited my brother Nigel, who was only eight at the time, to play washboard and a school friend on tea chest bass and we called ouselves "The Satellites".
In the days before colour television and magazines I had only seen Lonnie and his group, and their instruments in fl and white, now here before me was the real thing and in colour.
The show was over far to quickly but the night was complete when Lonnie came out to the stage door to sign autographs and I was one of the lucky ones.

Much maligned for his sheer arrogance at the time Donegan knew what he was doing and where it could take him but I bet he didn't realise what an impact his music would eventually have.
Prior to this, the last recording I have featuring Lonnie Donegan is a superb 2000 album by Van Morrison called 'The Skiffle Sessions' where the great men also team up with jazz man Chris Barber.

Lonnie suffered with heart problems during the eighties and I didn't see him again until 1992 when he was appearing in Hatfield with Chris Barber in his first show since a heart attack.
Lonnie sadly passed away on 3rd November 2002 at the home of two of his closest friends Mel and Linda Roberts.
I was privileged to attend Lonnie's cremation at Peterborough on Thursday 14th November 2002.
