Alfonzo "Lonnie" Johnson (February 8, 1894 – June 6, 1970) was a pioneering blues and jazz singer/guitarist born in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Lonnie Johnson's career was a rollercoaster ride that sometimes took him away from music.
Johnson died in Ontario, Canada, June 16, 1970 of complications resulting from a 1969 auto accident.

Lonnie Johnson was born February 8, 1894, at Rampart and Franklin in New Orleans.
Big Bill Broonzy remembered that "Lonnie told me he was born in New Orleans in 1894, but he looked to be, in 1952, about forty-seven years old." The entire family appears to have been musically gifted, and after a brief stint in a lumberyard, Lonnie began working with them, more or less professionally.
In 1969 Lonnie is badly injured in a traffic accident and while recovering suffers a stroke that paralysis his left side.

Johnson had first conceived his most famous invention in 1982: when a homemade nozzle at his bathroom sink shot a spray of water across the room, Johnson resolved to invent the world's first high-performance, pressurized water gun.

For more than 40 years, Johnson played blues, jazz, and ballads his way; he was a true blues originator whose influence hung heavy on a host of subsequent blues immortals.
Johnson went with Cincinnati-based King Records in 1947 and promptly enjoyed one of the biggest hits of his uncommonly long career with the mellow ballad "Tomorrow Night," which topped the RandB charts for seven weeks in 1948.
Johnson's influence was massive, touching everyone from Robert Johnson, whose seminal approach bore strong resemblance to that of his older namesake, to Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, who each paid heartfelt tribute with versions of "Tomorrow Night" while at Sun.

Ironically, while folk audiences were rejecting Johnson as not "bluesy" enough, Duke Ellington, in 1961, allegedly refused to appear on stage with the "old blues guy".
