The Daily Page: Music: War   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Lonnie Jordan's the only remaining original member of the Latin-inflected funk band War.
Jordan and the band's newer membership ran through "The Cisco Kid," "The World Is a Ghetto," the politically charged "Me and Baby Brother," the ultimate Latin-funk tune, "Low Rider," and a half-dozen other chunky chestnuts that were de rigueur booty-shakers at block parties and rock festivals back in the '70s.
Nostalgia for a time when funk and Latin fusion were big on the charts may have brought out a lot of the crowd, but War's subtle way with a groove and the 55-year-old Jordan's elastic pipes gave everyone plenty of reason to get down in the old-school style.

Not long after that, Jordan was writing hot-button political songs like "The World is a Ghetto" and "Slippin' into Darkness." Although Jordan's 'hood--Compton, Calif.--would later spawn a glut of thugs and gangbangers, he used the funk as a bully pulpit for social progress.
But as Jordan notes, War didn't always have to be so heavy; the band often immersed itself in the vitality of the streets.
According to Jordan, it's getting to be so that he can hardly turn on the TV without hearing one of his own creations.

So stunned by the natural charm of the Hawaiian Islands was Lonnie Jordan during his first visit to Oahu in 1969, that he forgot about all his possessions.
In War's maiden excursion to the islands, recalls Jordan, the band hadn't even released their first single, and although Burdon had already achieved star status with the Animals, the group was only slightly familiar with his work.
As Jordan tells it, songwriter/producer Jerry Goldstein, who co-wrote such indelible pop hits as "My Boyfriend's Back," "Hang On Sloopy" and "I Want Candy," showed up at a club in North Hollywood with Eric Burdon one evening, where the band had been backing another legendary figure -- NFL great Deacon Jones.

But most of their tunes were credited to the whole band, they frequently sang faceless harmonies all the way through a song, and they had four different soloists - saxophonist Charles Miller was quite competent, and harmonica player Lee Oskar was rivalled only by Stevie Wonder as a popularizer of the instrument.
Eventually, however, War just faded from view, with a string of personnel changes and two tragic deaths in the 80s leaving Lonnie Jordan, Howard Scott, and Harold Brown as the only survivors from the original lineup.
Veterans Brown, Scott, Jordan, and Goldstein wrote most of it, with Scott and Jordan splitting the lead vocals, the bass lines, and much of the instrumentation.
