Lonrho is planning to take full control of its platinum division and change its name to Lonmin, as part of a strategy to transform itself from a conglomerate into a mining company.
Lonrho is to acquire Tavistock Collieries, the South African coal producer, from JCI for £229m, and JCI is expected to use the proceeds to acquire a 26.7% stake in Lonrho.
Lonrho is selling its 94% stake in Lonrho Sugar Corporation to Illovo Sugar of South Africa for £227m, in order to reduce debt and prepare for a restructuring.

Lonrho's new "acceptable face" of capitalism is realistic about the challenges of operating in famously corrupt Africa but, as Lenigas said in a recent interview, "there are so many good deals around, there's no need to do the dodgy ones".

JSE-listed Lonrho Africa announced on Friday that it had signed an agreement to acquire a 34% interest in Sociedade de Aguas de Mocambique, Mozambique’s largest mineral water company, for $1,21-million.
Lonrho intended increasing its holding to over 50% by buying out minority shareholders in the future, the company said in a statement to shareholders.
"Lonrho has acquired an interest in a rapidly growing and well known brand of water with existing cash flows and infrastructure, an established distribution network, and further organic growth prospects both in Mozambique and the export market,” said Lonrho’s CE David Lenigas.
