Look to Windward by Iain M Banks | Extracts | Guardian Unlimited Books
The confused, pulsing schematics indicated there was great uncertainty in the representation (a bad enough sign in itself) but it looked like we were right in the line of the Invisibles' advance and we would soon be over-run.
His face took on a look of tenderness just for a moment and he said something, but explosions shook the ground and I had to ask him to repeat what he'd said as the echoes died away and more lights strobed in the skies above us.
I tried to turn and look back, but the doors slammed closed and I was thrown about the cramped interior while the tiny craft dodged rays and missiles aimed at it as it rose to the waiting ship Winter Storm.

“Look to Windward” is a story of intrigue set in Iain M. Banks’s futuristic “Culture”.
The subject of Look to Windward is death.
Look to Windward has the same sense of grandeur, of wonder even, as Bank’s earlier Culture books but is distinguished by the small scale, almost biographical attention on the main characters and the deft handling of the main theme of the book.

In some respects it serves as a sequel to the first Culture novel, Consider Phlebas: both titles are taken from T.S. Eliot's poem, The Waste Land.
It is has been favourably reviewed by many contemporary literary journals, and the author is considered to be one of the prime motivators for the return to the mainstream of contemporary UK fiction and science fiction.

Look to Windward is the latest of Iain Bank's science fiction novels, and it lives up to everything I have come to expect from this highly talented author.
In Look to Windward a widowed survivor of a civil war is sent to the Culture world of Masaq, apparently to persuade a composer to return to his home world from his self-imposed exile and help heal his people.
As you may have guessed, though a thriller, a mystery and space opera, Look to Windward is not the lightest of reads, so if a throw-away piece of entertainment is what you are looking for, this most certainly is not it.

Review: Ambiguous Reparations: Iain M. Banks' Look to Windward, reviewed by John Aegard
His latest SF effort, Look To Windward, takes us back to the Culture, the space opera utopia introduced over a decade ago in Consider Phlebas and expanded with three sequels since.
Look To Windward is built upon such a failed intervention, an attempt to wean the furry, five-limbed Chelgrians from their caste structure and encourage a more egalitarian cultural model.
About half of Windward focuses on Ziller and his inner circle, which includes the Homomdan ambassador/journalist Kabe Ischloear, the drone E.H. Tersono, and the various avatars of the Mind that controls Massaq' itself.

One reason people come to Windward involves a vague sense that something is missing in their lives, and a part of that has to do with the lack of relevant rites-of-passage.
Windward spends a lot of time hammering out its vision of what it's doing, and polishing the operational theories that we rely on, but we always try to remember that it's our theory that has to fit the world, and not the other way around.

 immediacy: Look to Windward
Look to Windward is the seventh book in Banks' science fiction universe based on a utopian society of advanced artificial intelligences and the humans (and other organic life forms) that originally created them, loosely termed the Culture.
Each storyline is given its own chapters, which some people find difficult to follow but I've always enjoyed, although it makes keeping track of the story much more difficult when the time spent reading the book occurs over weeks rather than hours.
It's not that Banks brings anything new to science fiction in his Culture novels; even the Culture itself can be found by looking at some mixture of Cordwainer Smith and Isaac Asimov.

BookPage Fiction Review: Science Fiction Roundup
Banks' latest novel, Look to Windward, follows a plot hidden from both the reader and the character who will carry it out.
He does not want to meet the Chelgrian ambassador or return to Chel, and his attempts to escape the ambassador, his petty tantrums and his utter refusal to do what is expected of him make for some very enjoyable and highly imaginative adventures.
Banks is one of the smartest and funniest writers in (or out of) science fiction, and Look to Windward will keep his reputation on the upslope.

So I promised I'd talk about Iain M. Banks' Look to Windward, a sci-fi novel that seems to be part of a greater series, with no information inside the book or on the cover as to where it sits within that series.
The science is interesting and relatively low-key; instead of making a big deal of all the neato things Banks has thought up, it describes them as we would everyday objects - the amount of detail only extending so far as to inform the reader of function as related to the plot.
Look to Windward is moderately recommended, and I'll be off to the bookstore to buy more of his books as soon as my schedule allows.

Look to Windward takes place in Banks’ Culture universe, and is a tale of revenge that deals with the consequences of a superior culture interfering in the affairs of a lesser one.
In this case it was The Culture, a highly advanced collection of humans and AI, interfering in the affairs of a race called the Chelgrians, to disastrous effect.

SFFAudio - The future never sounded so good.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
This is the compelling lead-in to Iain M. Banks’ novel Look to Windward, but it is far from the whole story.
The novel takes us far into the future of humanity, across the astoundingly large artificial surface of Masaq’, down deep voids of space on a series of amusingly named spacecraft, through the bitter civil war on Chel, and even into the belly of a large, atmosphere-containing being and the enormous blimp-like life forms inside it.
Look to Windward is part of a larger series of Culture novels, but don’t let that scare you off.
