Regex Tutorial - Lookahead and Lookbehind Zero-Width Assertions
The difference is that lookarounds will actually match characters, but then give up the match and only return the result: match or no match.
Lookarounds allow you to create regular expressions that are impossible to create without them, or that would get very longwinded without them.
As soon as the lookaround condition is satisfied, the regex engine forgets about everything inside the lookaround.

Regular Expressions in .NET - DevBuilder
Lookaround is a feature that is partially implemented in JScript but not in VBScript.
There are two directions of lookaround - lookahead and lookbehind - and two flavors of each direction - positive assertion and negative assertion.
Another good example of using lookaround would be to validate "special" password conditions such as: "Password must be between 8 and 20 characters, must contain at least 2 letter characters and at least 2 digit characters.

Regex to Test The Same Part of The String for More Than One Requirement
Lookaround, which I introduced in detail in the previous topic, is a very powerful concept.
Unfortunately, it is often underused by people new to regular expressions, because lookaround is a bit confusing.
The confusing part is that the lookaround is zero-width.

 New Micros, Inc - Schedule-runs
So the reason it crashed on C350 is it couldn't find a word C350 in the dictionary, and it couldn't convert C350 to a valid number in the current base (decimal) so it assumed C350 had to be an error.
Moving LOOKAROUND into CONSTEST would mean the LOOKAROUND behavior would only happen in contest (or out of contest) Better to give LOOKAROUND it's own full statemachine, and then add complexity as required, where it can stop looking around and look at something, for instance.
While LOOKAROUND will change the points the head should turn to look, it won't actually go look there, because you have a sequence in QTPID that actually moves the head.

The Lookaround Principle provides a fairly simple, quite common way of deciding the right way to act--without requiring each individual to agonize over, or to think deeply about, decisions.
The Lookaround Prinicple offers a good deal of self-protection, because you are not personally blameable if you just are doing the same as what everyone else is doing.
The Lookaround Principle tends to produce the morality of the lowest common denominator, that is, the smallest number of moral rules or restrictions that everyone can agree on.

 Wayne's Regex Rants
There have been a number of posts and replies for 'killer' reasons for lookaround (starting with Darren's query), and I want to drop a few thoughts into the fray.
A fine example of this would seem to be a password validation regex, such as “verify at least 8 characters, and includes at least one digit, one letter, and one symbol”.
Use lookaround to test each independent and possibly overlapping requirement.

Justin Rogers : Darren's "Killer Reason for LookAround" posting has been haunting me
Every time he comes up with a posting like the above I get an instant message of some sort or another with a quizzical question, “Hehe, you want to be unproductive today!” or something similarly intriguing.
That is how I was introduced to the killer reason for a lookaround challenge.
I replied to Darren's post so rather than repeat myself I'll just refer you there but I mentioned a few reasons why lookaheads seemed to be needed, or at least the better choice for some regexes I wrote.
