A long-time Whistler tradition, the Loonie Race, will be expanded and shared with the world as a featured event at the inaugural Summer Gravity Festival - Whistler's mountain bike celebration set for July 14-20.
Open to mountain bikers of all levels and abilities and hosted by WORCA (the Whistler Off-Road Cycling Association) on July 17, the World's Biggest Loonie Race is expected to be the largest competition of its kind.
The World's Largest Loonie Race is also a memorial event for Al Grey, former WORCA president who was instrumental in the growth and success of the organization.

We know that loony means crazy or foolish but we also know that it is fairly common to see words with more than one meaning.
I have not had any success in finding who first came up with the word "loonie," but read that the word was "quickly coined." I believe it was quickly accepted by the Canadian public.
