Topic: Loop jump

  Figure Skating Journal Glossary, Jumps
The lutz is a counter rotation jump, meaning the skater glides into the jump in the opposite direction to which he will rotate the jump in the air.
This is a critical jump in the development of a figure skater because the movements involved in the take-off of this jump are similar to those required for the toe loop and salchow.
For the jump to appear spectacular, it is usually performed as a delayed axel and the skater seems to hesitate for a moment in the air in a tucked posture.

Loop jump - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
To do a loop jump, a skater typically does a 3 turn or mohawk turn onto a left back inside edge, then reaches into the circle on the right back outside edge while drawing the left foot (still on the ice) to cross in front of the right.
Half loops are only done as single jumps, and are primarily used as connecting elements in a jump sequence, before a salchow jump or flip jump which take off from a back inside edge.
The loop jump should not be confused with the toe loop jump, which has significantly different mechanics and technique.

The Waltz jump is done on the arc of a circle starting from a LFO edge and landing on the RBO edge, with one half rotation.
The sequence of the jump is a down-up-down movement.
A toe-loop is a toe-assisted jump done from a RBO edge (for CCW jumpers)- usually after a RFI 3-turn.

It is one of the easiest jumps and is usually the first jump a skater learns.
In a toe loop, a skater does a right backward three turn, plants his or her left toe in the ice, and pushes off the right leg into the air.
A loop is when a skater does right over left crossovers, puts the left foot in front of the right foot, pushes off with the right foot, does one revolution in the air, and lands back on the right leg.

The Layperson's Guide to Lutzes & Loops
A jump “cheat”:  a cheated jump is when the skater completes the intended revolutions, but part of that revolution is done while the skate is on the ice, not while the skater is in the air.
The toe loop is usually the easiest multi-rotation jump for skaters to perform--as such, it is the jump performed most often in routines (aside from a double Axel).
However, what separates it from the standard loop jump is that it is landed on the "wrong" foot; i.e., whereas a CCW skater lands a loop on their right foot, they would land a half loop on their left foot.

This jump can also be performed as an individual jump or as a second jump in a jump combination.
In the first five jumps discussed earlier(except the toe walley), the rotation of the jumps are done in the same direction as the skating direction.
In the case of a lutz, the rotation of the jump is the reverse of the skating direction.

Competitive Figure Skating FAQ: Technical Elements
If the jump is approached from an outside three turn and step instead, it's sometimes called a "toe walley"; technically the toe walley is supposed to be done from an inside edge, but otherwise the two jumps are considered equivalent.
Note that "natural" rotation refers to a jump that rotates in the same direction (e.g., counterclockwise) as the entrance edge, while "counter" rotation refers to the entrance edge being in the opposite sense to the jump rotation.
The thing that distinguishes a jump combination from a jump series is that in a combination, there are no intervening steps or turns between the jumps; the landing edge for each jump forms the take-off edge for the next.

Remember the loop jump is a dead jump and the majority of the power comes from the edge and your ability to generate the most power from the edge.
The spring from the jump needs to be straight up--what is probably happening when you say that you land with no speed is that you are pre-rotating the jump which causes the blade to turn on the ice resulting in a skid which reduces the amount of speed---do you read your print?
The pring left from a good loop jump will be two very deep rounded edges--I refer to them as what your shoulders would look like if you were to lay down and draw them.

Figure Skating Journal Glossary, Positional Jumps
Toe assisted jumps are most commonly initiated like a half-flip from a forward inside to back inside mohawk or LFO3 turn followed by reaching back with the right leg, tapping the ice with the right toe and vaulting into the air.
A toe loop entrance may also be used to enter positional jumps, although this variation is not as common for stags and splits.
The jump is a delayed axel with the delay occurring in a Russian split pose.

 Welcome to the Jump Guide
In the jump guide, you'll find the descriptions for all of the jumps commonly used in competition, as well as some that are not as well known.
The reason for the restriction is that the landing edge for the first jump must be the same as the take-off edge for the second jump in order for it to be counted as a combination.
However, if the skater was doing a triple Lutz/triple loop combination, there is no toe pick on the second jump, meaning that after the skater lands the Lutz, he or she goes straight back up into the air for the triple loop.

 Ice Skating: The Inside Edge
The toe loop is one of three jumps that require the toepick (the flip and the lutz are the others).
Historically, the loop jump came from a figure called the "loop." In the loop figure, the skater started on a right backward outside edge, and quickly went into a very deep edge, making a figure that looks like a loop on the ice (a little like a loop-the-loop on a roller coaster, but narrower).
Instead, it is the same as a regular loop jump, except for the fact that you land on a left backward inside edge.

The Vertical Loop & the Texas Skip
Using spin acceleration to prevent the loop from closing, the roper begins pulling the spoke from the right to the left side of the body when the honda is at the 12 o'clock position.
During the jump the roper continues to pull the spoke to the left as the honda passes through the point mid-way between 6 and 12 o'clock as illustrated in Figure 3.1(b).
The result in (3.8) says that the honda mass which stabilizes the Vertical Loop is equal to the radius of the loop multiplied by the linear density of the cord.
