Nuts are usually hexagonal to permit tightening with a wrench, but may also be square, knurled, winged, or otherwise shaped.
Nuts are graded with strength ratings compatible with their respective bolts; for example, a property class 10 nut will be able to support the rated torque and clamp load of a property class 10.9 bolt.
The nut property class, when multiplied by 100, is the proof strength of the nut in MPa.

Loose Wheel Nuts - Causes and Effects, News Articles
When present on the threads or between a nut and the wheel surface, these contaminants can also change the clamping force / torque relationship, resulting in "false torques" where much of the torque applied is used to overcome friction and is not converted into clamping force.
Wheels are subjected to a variety of forces, including vertical forces from the vehicle and its cargo, road vibration and shock forces, cornering forces when the vehicle turns, and rotational forces from the turning of the wheel, especially during acceleration and braking.
When a wheel nut loosens these forces are redistributed among the remaining nuts and studs, but preferentially to the nuts and studs adjacent to the loose nut, causing these nuts to back off at reduced wheel force levels.

Most of the inspection stations know this system and will realize that the driver is aware of the loose nut and will pass him through to go to a maintenance shop.

And the magnificent Loose Nut more than earns a place among both the top 50 punk and metal (no, not shitty pop-metal, but real metal) records of all time.
The basic musical idea for Loose Nut was to combine the speed and nihilism of punk rock with the heavy and rollicking pound of Sabbath-esque metal, and it works better than you'd imagine.
Loose Nut is relatively short and sweet with varied song structures, which prevent the tracks from blending together.

Getting Tight With Torque Wrenches, Larry Carley, Tomorrow's Technician, October 2005
Anytime you tighten a nut, bolt or screw, you are applying torque through a wrench, ratchet handle, nutdriver or screwdriver.
Impact wrenches are great for loosening high-torque fasteners, such as hub nuts and lug nuts and also rusty bolts like those on exhaust manifolds, shock absorbers, struts and other steering and suspension parts.
If the lug nuts are too tight or not all tightened to the same value, it can distort the hub and rotor causing the rotor to wear unevenly and develop a brake pedal pulsation over time.

Loose axle nut kills wheel bearing
With the nuts loose, it was obvious that one bearing was toast.
As Arthur mentioned, it's nearly impossible to feel free play in the bearing if the axle nut is tight, so if you felt this without taking anything apart, that's a sure sign the nut was loose.
Whoever did the bearing didn't torque the axle nut properly, or else failed to put the proper axle nut locking hardware back on.
