  Lophiiformes
The order Lophiiformes contains a highly diverse array of marine fishes that are primitively benthic shallow-water dwellers, but have evolved to form several groups of deep-shelf and slope inhabitants as well as a highly modified assemblage of open-water, meso- and bathypelagic species.
Probably the most striking characteristic of early ontogeny in lophiiform fishes is that eggs are spawned encapsulated within a non-adhesive, balloon-shaped mucoid mass (Ray, 1961) or, more typically, a continuous, ribbon-like sheath of gelatinous mucous, often referred to as an "egg-raft" or "veil" (with some exceptions, see Pietsch and Grobecker, 1980, 1987).
Thus the Monte Bolca lophiiforms indicate that at least three of the major lophiiform lineages (lophioids, antennarioids, and ogcocephaloids) were already in existence in the early Eocene.

Members of Lophiiformes, in particular, have highly modified pectoral (and, to a lesser extent, pelvic) musculoskeletal systems.
However, little work has focused on other benthic walking families of Lophiiformes including Ogcocephalidae, the walking batfishes.

Deep-sea Anglerfishes (Melanocetidae and Ceratiidae) characteristics, habitat, behavior
Eleven families of the order Lophiiformes (anglerfishes) live in the deep sea, with nearly a hundred species, more than any other group of bathypelagic fishes.
In contrast species of the family Antennariidae (frogfishes) live mostly in shallow water, close to coral reefs.
Female deep sea anglerfishes have a globular shape, not adapted for sustained rapid swimming, but designed for remaining motionless much of the time.
