Asriel is a member of the English aristocracy in a parallel universe dominated by an oppressive version of the Christian Church.
Throughout the trilogy, meetings between Asriel and his daughter are sparse, and when they do occur, he is terse and rude, seeming to think of her as a pest, and not at all as a daughter.

Thus a planned expedition to the north by Lord Asriel is held in disfavor by some very powerful people, to say the least.
Of course, it transpires that Lyra is involved deeply with Lord Asriel's expedition, and will play a prominent role in its outcome, though exactly what that outcome will be remains to be seen.

I have nothing against daniel craig i think he will be a good bond,however as an Asriel.No thanks.I see Asriel also always with darker hair of course there is dye for the hair but who wants a fake Asriel.He simply does not fit in the role.Bad news,........again.
i'm not saying asriel was buff, but he defintely had a powerful air about him and to me bettany did not fit the bill at all.
It would seem as though this guy will work well enough for Lord Asriel, but I hope that the costume artist will at least give him some sort of beard; I don't know why, but I've always imagined Lord Asriel with some sort of short, well-manicured and graying beard.
