The appointment of Rear-Admiral Lord Charles Beresford to be second in command of the Mediterranean Fleet withdraws from Parliament a man whose influential criticisms have done much to strengthen the Navy, and, in consequence, to maintain peace during the Foshoda friction between England and France.
In 1886 he was Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty, and resigned it two years later as a protest against the nation's neglect of the Fleet.
Lord Charles Beresford, who has received an important command in the Mediterranean proposes to resign his seat for York, but it is possible that he may retain it for a time in deference to the wishes of the Unionist Party in that city.

A critic in the Commons charged that it was not necessary for the First Lord to go to sea at all, and that, because naval stations were dotted round the coast on land, they would be visited more quickly and cheaply by rail.
He was also attempting to respond to the admonition of Lord Fisher: "Re- member that the submarine is now the dominating sea fighting factor and you are not building enough of them." Churchill knew that he had to take an Empire view on the matter.
In a letter to Lord Fisher he stated this concern for their welfare: "As for the dockyard workmen, it is socially just that men who work all their lives faithfully for the State should have permanency and pension guaranteed, just like Admirals!"

GENUKI: What's in a Name, BERESFORD, from "The Peak Advertiser", Derbyshire
It has long been held that because "Beresford" in old records appears as "Beversford" and because this seems to correspond with the Old English word "beofer" which was the name for the creature known as the "beaver", then it must follow that the name signifies: "The ford frequented by beavers".
Although the "Dales" are inseparably part of the Derbyshire landscape, "Beresford Dale" is placed within the boundaries of the parish of Alstonefield in North Staffordshire and was assumed as the surname of a titled family in that County.
Those who have studied genealogies say that all present-day persons of the name can trace their descent from Thomas Beresford who not only fought gallantly at the Battle of Agincourt (1415) but also took time off to procreate 16 sons and 5 daughters.
