Archibald Acheson, 2nd Earl of Gosford GCB (Markethill, County Armagh August 1, 1776 – March 27, 1849 Markethill) was a British politician who served as Lieutenant-Governor of Lower Canada and Governor General of British North America in the 19th century.
In November, Lord Gosford learned of the planned Lower Canada Rebellion and had many of Papineau's followers arrested, although Papineau himself escaped to the United States.
His eventual successor, Lord Durham, implemented the Union Act in 1840 (which Lord Gosford unsuccessfully argued against).

LaFontaine, however, did not approve the violent methods of his leader, and after the hostilities at Saint Denis he presented a petition to Lord Gosford requesting him to summon the assembly and to adopt measures to stem the revolutionary course of events in Lower Canada.

Much as I enjoyed "Lord of the Rings" (it was about my family, after all) I think that it will probably win only a couple of the minor oscars and be shut out of the major ones.
Five years from now, many people will still like "A beautiful mind" (which was a very good movie), but "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" will be admired as a landmark, loved as a film, and watched and rented over and over again.
"Lord of the Ring" was pretty good, but "A Beautiful Mind" is a much more powerful story with a much more entertaining plot.

They accordingly came here about five o'clock in the evening marching in regular files by two and two with orange cockades unarmed, and by companies which were distinguished by numbers upon their flags.
What Lord Gosford termed companies (probably due to their military countenance on parade), were of course Orange lodges.

When the English government authorized Lord Gosford to take what money he needed from the public treasury, Girouard addressed meetings in several counties of the province of Quebec in opposition to this violation of the prerogatives of the legislature, but still deprecated a resort to physical force.
In 1838 Lord Durham, the new governor-general, offered to allow the leaders of the insurrection to go into exile and to pardon the rest on condition that the former would sign a paper acknowledging their participation in the revolt.

Papineau quickly became the recognized leader of the patriotes, the French-Canadian reformers, and his political strength was such that in 1820 the governor, Lord Dalhousie, sought to gain his support by offering Papineau a seat on the Executive Council.
In March 1837 the British government ordered the governor, Lord Gosford, to pay the expenses of government from crown funds.
On Oct. 23, 1837, a meeting of patriotes was held at St. Charles, during the course of which armed rebellion was advocated.
