John James Robert Manners, 7th Duke of Rutland, KG, GCB, PC (13 December 1818–4 August 1906), known as Lord John Manners before 1888, was an English statesman.
He was born at Belvoir Castle on the 13th of December 1818, being the younger son of the 5th Duke of Rutland by Lady Elizabeth Howard, daughter of Lord Byron's guardian, the 5th Earl of Carlisle.
Lord John Manners, as he then was, was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge.

Lord John Manners, as he then was, was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge.
Manners made an extensive tour of inspection in the industrial parts of N. England, in the course of which he and his friend Smythe expounded their views with a brilliancy which frequently extorted compliments from the leaders of the Manchester school.
In 1843 he supported Lord Grey's motion for an inquiry into the condition of England, the serious disaffection of the working classes of the north being a subject to which he was constantly drawing, the attention of parliament.

His son John, 9th earl (163817 11), a partisan of the revolution of 1688, received the Princess Anne at Belvoir Castle on her flight from London; after the accession of Anne to the throne she created him marquess of Granby and duke of Rutland in 1703.
His eldest son, John Henry, 5th duke (17781857), was the duke in Disraelis Coningsby; the latters two sons, the marquess of Granby and Lord John Manners, figuring in the same novel as the marquis of Beaumanoir and Lord Henry Sidney respectively.

 Sir John MANNERS of Haddon Hall
Manners was supported in the county by his brother-in-law and close friend, George, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury, who appointed Manners a deputy when he became lord lieutenant of Derbyshire in 1585.
Sir John Manners and his brother Roger founded the hospital of St. John at Bakewell, for six poor men who were made a body corporate, and endowed in 1602, at the expence of 600 pounds with anuities or rent-charges to the amout of 40 pounds per annnum.
Manners died at Haddon on 4 Jun 1611 and was buried with his wife in Bakewell church, in the chapel where are also various monuments, as of of Sir Thomas Wendesley, mortally wounded, whilst fighting on the side of the House of Lancaster, at the battle of Shrewsbury; Sir John Vernon, Knt.

He was present in the Crimea during the war, and was a member of the committee appointed to inquire into the conduct of the expedition.

In 1878 Disraeli was elevated to the House of Lords as the Earl of Beaconsfield; his administration was attacked by Gladstone for its policy towards the Ottoman Empire.
