The Duke of Kent is to be the first to receive a new annual award to be given for service to the county.
It incorporates a replica of the Amherst Brooch, made in Kent in the early 7th Century, and the white horse badge of Kent.
Recipients will be chosen by a panel including the Lord Lieutenant, the chairman of Kent County Council, the deans of Canterbury and Rochester cathedrals and the Chief Constable of Kent.

As a Deputy Lieutenant he was responsible for the defence of England’s south-east coastline to counter the threat of Spanish invasion, including preparations against the Spanish Armada.
He served as a captain in Lord Willoughby’s expeditions to France in 1589 and he was responsible for raising volunteers for Norris’s expedition of the same year, for Cadiz in 1596, and for the Netherlands in 1601-2.

 Britannia Biographies: Thomas Holland, 1st Earl of Kent
Sir Thomas Holland, the second son of Robert, 1st Lord Holland, and Maud De La Zouche, was engaged, in 1340, in the English expedition into Flanders and sent, two years later, with Sir John D'Artevelle to Bayonne, to defend the Gascon frontier against the French.
At the Battle of Crécy, he was one of the principal commanders in the van under the Prince of Wales and he, afterwards, served at the Siege of Calais in 1346-7.
In the last-mentioned year, he assumed the title of Earl of Kent, in right of his wife; and on the 20th November was summoned to parliament by that title.

The first item I have to report is that our President celebrated his 75th birthday in January and therefore was obliged to hand over his role as Her Majesty's Lord Lieutenant for Kent.
The President was due to have been in Saudi Arabia but as there appeared to be some kind of conflict developing in that part of the world he had a change of heart and decided that the Medway Branch Dinner looked a far more attractive proposition.

During the 18th century it was a private house and notorious as a centre of the Kent and Sussex border county smuggling trade.
He afterwards identified his robber who was able to prove he was with the Lord Mayor of York at 8.30 pm that same day, and was acquitted of the robbery by a jury that could not bring itself to believe that a man could be in Higham and York on the same day.
Apparently, he was a guest of Lord and Lady Hothfield at their mansion, Hothfield Place, when the inspiration prompted him to pop across to the church and try the new piece out on the organ there.

 Grenadier Guards - Medway Branch
In 1948 it was decided that, with Kent being such a large county, the existing Kent Branch of the Grenadier Guards Association should be divided into two and thus the East Kent and West Kent Branches were born.
Major Sidney (now Viscount De Lisle) was invited to return to his home area and take over as President of the West Kent Branch in 1988 and Major J F C Rodwell replaced him until his work took him away from the area and he was forced to resign from the post.
In 1993 he retired from the Bank of England and was elevated to the peerage to become Lord Kingsdown.
